Nursing after Nipple Piercings? Help?

Hi ladies! Im newly pregnant and while Im sure I am capable of making a great supply Im a little concerned I may not be able to breastfeed due to some scaring in my nipples from nipple piercings (ya good ol teenage years). Does anyone know anything about this or what my chances are? Its very important to me to breast feed and Im going to be so sad if I cannot

I was just visiting a friend today who had nipple piercings up until she got pregnant. She has successfully nursed two babies. As far as I know, piercings are unlikely to cause you many problems, especially if they were long since removed. The only possible problem might be scar tissue blocking a milk duct, but ducts can and do reroute themselves. I had horrendous cracks when I was first nursing my DD, and while they eventually healed nicely, there is a scar there (That only I can see). The scarred area is much larger than any piercing I've ever seen, and I've never had any trouble nursing since the cracks healed. In short, I think you'll do just fine!

Nah, you should be fine.

I've had low supply. but i doubt my piercings had anything to do with it. Your milk will leak out of your piercing holes, but no biggie!

You should be just fine - maybe marginally more likely to have some plugging issues, but really nothing to worry about besides not panicking if it does happen. Just come back here and we'll help you .

I didn't have a problem. I had some strange scar tissue like stuff that kind of...exfoliated itself during the first few days but no other issues after that.

i had mine done, lots of scarring, no problem nursing any of my brood

Can I bump to ask.... for those of us who still HAVE their piercings, when should you remove them? When you find out you're pregnant? Before you start TTC? Do they need time to heal or would it be better to deliver, slip 'em out, and start nursing? :

Is it possible to nurse and keep your piercings?? Just remove the jewelry for nursing sessions?

I had (what I believe to be) a recurrent plugged duct with one nipple for the last... ugh, year now. I think it is finally clearing up. : How might one proactively work against a predisposition to clogs due to piercings? (Cuz it's sucked and I'd rather not repeat this issue for another year!)

Mine had been out for a while before I started nursing, but I have heard that you can take them out as late as you like.

That said, it would be a tremendous hassle to try to keep them while nursing. Mostly because the reality of breastfeeding involves a LOT of time and on/off, and you're not going to want to bother with your jewelry, I bet.

Once you've had a piercing for a while, it's pretty much a healed scar -- it's not going to change much even with the jewelry out. Mine have been out for ten years, and I can still get jewelry in there if I want.

So what's up with the plugged duct? What exactly has happened?

I got pregnant right after I got my nips pierced. I kept the jewelry in until the birth of my daughter because I wanted the piercings to heel as well as possible before I started nursing. If you've had yours for a while, I don't think that would be an issue.

I chose to take my jewelry out permanently for nursing since it was a total hassle to fuss with tiny jewelry for the dozens of feedings. And taking out jewelry before NIPing? WAY too much trouble. This meant that my piercings have slowly healed over the past 10 months, but not before some interesting leaking episodes. Breast milk is great for the skin and I've had no issues with the healing aside from a bought of thrush- which really had nothing to do with the piercings.

I've never experienced any clogged milk ducts due to nursing. In fact, I'd guess that the extra, um... outlets, would help prevent milk ducts from getting clogged. Any pressure put on the breast weather it's due to jewelry or bras can cause a clog.

You can PM me if you need more info.

Yeah I was thinking about trying to keep them, but then I thought... what a pain to have to take them in and out every hour or so, at least at first, and if my nipples get sore like new breastfeeding moms' usually do, am I really going to want to be shoving jewelry through chapped and inflamed nips? Uh, probably not.

Heck if I know. I just got this irritated patch right on the tip of one nipple. I thought it was a pimple. It would cycle through scabbing over, oozing nastiness, healing a bit, scabbing over, oozing nastiness... after a month of it I went to my Dr. and he said it was just a plugged duct, don't worry about it, it will clear itself up. That was LAST November, and I've FINALLY been clear of this thing for a few weeks now. When it scabbed over it would have a little black pinprick dot right in the middle. And I'm a picker, so I'd pick it off, and that would leave me with a little crater in my skin where I'd picked the dot out.

It wasn't particularly painful though it did get uncomfortable if it got backed up with the oozing nastiness stage. The worst part was that it was located right over the horizontal bar of my piercing so it was impossible to squeeze out comfortably (again, I'm a picker..... I can't help it!!).

Anyway. I switched bras and starting taking my bra off as much as I could a few weeks back and that seems to have helped. So now I wonder if my regular bra type (push up) was causing the problem?

You'll be fine!

I had mine pierced in college and had no problems (caused by the piercings at least) nursing either of my kids. I took them out when I was about 6 months pregnant with DS.

Huh. Weird.

I bet you're right on the bra theory, though. I got a plugged duct a while back, still pregnant, when I went up a cup size and hadn't bought new bras yet.

The power of baby suction goes a long way toward keeping things clear in the piercing area, IME.
