Thank you everyone for your awesome suggestions! I am looking forward to interviewing some great midwives!

I was wondering if anyone knows of any homebirth CNMs that would come to the Kent, Ohio area (near Akron)? I had originally thought that CNMs were not allowed to attend homebirths but that misconception has been cleared up! I'm not opposed to using a DEM, but I want to explore all my options. Thank you!

CNM's may not attend homebirths in Ohio. Quite plainly, they may be permitted by law, but since they require the backing of an OBGYN, they cannot practice outside of a medical environment; the docs won't allow it.

A DEM or a CPM (Certified Professional Midwife) will attend a homebirth.

Sorry, I need to disagree. There is a difference between not being allowed to legally (meaning by scope of practice and state midwifery regulations) and not having a consultant who supports the midwife attending birth OOH.

A good friend of mine is a CNM and practices in Ohio. She has practiced in two different areas of the state and had physicians who continued as her consultant while she attended OOH births. She currently works near Steubenville and still occasionally attends a home birth. There was another CNM near Lima who also used to attend home births with her consultant's blessing. I have lost touch with her, so not sure if she still does.

So it isn't a matter of they can't, some don't want to, and others do.

Hey, Linda could I possibly bug you to PM me the CNM near Lima who was in the past attending OOH births? I had my last baby with a CNM in Lima at a hospital waterbirth. I'm also a doula near Lima and I would love to have more information if possible. Thanks!
