crib mattress pads

I keep the nursery door closed throughout the day. I took off the sheets one day and closed the door. When I walked back in later that day I noticed a heavy...plasticy smell that really bothered me. So, I am wondering if this is causing my little ones eyes to get red. I didn't notice it until I removed the mattress pad cover and the sheets.

First, I am wondering if I can just replace the pad covers (Originally I bought the pads from a thrift store proud that I spend on a buck....) with something organic/hypoallergenic (excuse my spelling).

Or should I buy all new mattresses. I have two mattresses then that I need to replace ( actually three...don't ask...I have two cribs and a toddler bed). That would be majorally expensive I don't think I could swing that.

I have wool matress pads to avoid PVC. If you can, I'd get rid of your current cover and let the mattress air out a bit, then use the wool cover. If it still stinks, you could replace the mattress at that point (and if you get a nice organic mattress, you'll want a wool cover for it anyway!).
