My second grade son has an awful lot of homework each night, more than an hour every night. I feel it is way too much for him to do. Note: that in addition to regular PS he attends Japanese school on Saturdays and has to do Japanese homework. I think most of the homework that he has to do for PS is worthless -- lots of spelling and math worksheets.

Thank you so much for posting the following info:

I checked out these links and emailed them to my son's teacher. After checking out these links --- my feelings that homework is completely useless were validated. Yes, homework is taking time away from my son simply being a kid. What ever happened to kids having time to play outside and to play with their friends? Why is it that our schools are treating kids like adults instead of like children? (i.e. My son only has 20 min. of recess a day and over an hour of homework every night.)

My thoughts are with you. Your post gave me the courage to contact my son's teacher about his excessive homework. I have a conference with his teacher and his Vice Principal about this. Wow!! I can't believe that homework is such an important issue in second grade. (i.e. That the PS wants to bring the Vice Principal into this.) Back in the 1970s, when I was in 3rd grade my mom told my teacher that homework is absolutely useless and that I wouldn't be doing any. The teacher's response was, "OK. That's fine." I doubt that my mom had to fight over this issue.
