Any other October babies have reflux??

IF so maybe we could support and encourage one another?

My middle child had reflux as well so I've been here before.. but ughhhhhh it's so hard some days!

I've tried home remedies for about a week now with baby Samuel and it just isn't enough. So we are headed in to the doctor tomorrow morning to see about getting him put on medication. My middle boy was on PPI meds (Prevacid) from 3 months to 11 months.

I called my midwife today just for confirmation basically even though in my heart I knew the answer sometimes you just need someone else to tell you it's so before you can really believe it yourself. My DH was still doubting to, so having her confirm things helped him too I think.

She asked what was going on, so I described the screaming, arching back/neck, can't lay flat without screaming, and either spitting up or regurgitating without spitting it out at pretty much every feeding now. Long spurts of crying/fussing/eating and repeating etc. And she immediately agreed that he has reflux.

She also told me that the only reasons to medicate for reflux were if baby isn't gaining well (but I 'think' he is though he hasn't been weighed for a few weeks), or if they are in pain.. and he's definitely in pain.

So we are headed in to see our family doctor at 9:30am tomorrow, hopefully we can get him on some medication and headed towards feeling better soon. I remember with my middle child we didn't learn what was wrong till he was 3 months old (poor thing) and just thought he was a clingy/screamy baby *sigh,* but a short time on meds and he was like a whole new kid. So I can only hope that by catching things earlier this time the baby will be better sooner and not have to go through those months of suffering.

Meanwhile I've got a wedge under the head of the crib to elevate his head (for the rare times that I can get him to sleep alone that is), try to keep him upright after feeds, and gently burp so as to get all the burps but not cause him to spit-up anymore then he already does.

I've also got a infant size Tucker sling (6-16lbs) ordered earlier this week, hopefully it'll come soon, we had the larger size (16-24lbs) for my other kiddo since we caught it late and he was a big boy (comfort nurser) at 3 months.

My midwife doesn't think that cutting things out of my diet is going to change things, and since I already have a very limited diet (due to severe hypoglycemia) I think I agree. It's most likely just due to his esophagus not being mature yet.

So anyway,
anybody else having to deal with the dreaded acid reflux in their precious new babies??

yep, nak right now so will be short.

We are on day 6 of Axid. It seems to be helping some, but its not "great" yet. My oldest, Simon, had a pyloric stenosis that was treated as reflux for a few weeks and we were worried about that repeating with Phin, but it really look like it is refulx this time. I kind of wish it was the pyloric stenosis, because although it meant sugery, it was a very easy fix.

We are dealing with the constant spitting, arching, painful grunting... cant lay him down to sleep. I have been putting him on his tummy to sleep for weeks now because I am more afraid of his choking on spit up then I am about SIDS, especially when he sleeps RIGHT NEXT to me, if not ON me.

Anyway, just letting you know you are not alone.

Oh, and I live near KC as well... I am in Olathe!

Helena has reflux and we just started her on .5 ml of zantac. Poor babe... She has hiccups a lot and hates to be on her back. She had lost 13 percent of her birthweight, possibly from not keeping her meals down, but she's getting it back up now. It is challenging not to be able to put her on her cosleeper; I have been letting her sleep on me in her sleepywrap most of the time. Does not work well for my sleep. It's grueling.

Thanks for starting this thread!

Well our family doctor agreed with me about it being reflux and put him on 1/4 solutab daily of Prevacid (same stuff my other kid took). I sure hope this gives him (and us) some relief.

I'm sorry you all have to deal with this too, but glad we can support each other.

nak, onehanded, so briefly...

Calliope seems to have silent reflux, but I'm not certain. She was weighed today at 3 weeks and still not back to her birthweight. Apart from the occasional screaming, back arching and slow weight gain she seems perfectly healthy. It sounds like something is coming up sometimes, but she doesn't spit up (only a little milk dribbles out), and her belly is quite gurgly. She does not like to be on her back, and sleeps on her side or on her tummy on me.

I'm also worried that I may have supply issues, but she seems to be feeding well and often (lac consultant thought it all sounded good.)

The midwife and health visitor weren't too worried, but mama is. Tomorrow she'll see the doctor.

Happily, Helena has regained most (not all yet) of her birthweight...she's sleeping in the bouncy chair unless she's sleeping on me. She's still spitting up & vomiting some; it seems like it's sometimes related to her stress level. (? - just a guess there) Burping her before switching sides of the breast and holding her upright after meals also has helped a bit.

I've eliminated non-cultured dairy & am considering gluten as well.

I wonder if there are good natural / at home remedies for gassiness & reflux.

I'm starting to suspect Jasper has reflux... he was back to an ounce below birthweight at 5 days but it seems the issues started after that. I am going to have my midwife weigh him tomorrow when he has his PKU test to see how well he's gaining, but he's spitting up after every meal (gags and coughs and usually swallows it but I see the curdled milk in his mouth), gets the hiccups all the time... is this silent reflux? He cries and arches his back sometimes and I can tell he's in pain, but he's nowhere near refusing to feed. He projectile vomited tonight (almost in his big brother's face lol) for the first time and I hope it doesn't happen again.

I'm making sure to burp him after every feed but sometimes he won't burp. He doesn't scream if he's on his back though, but I always put him on his side to sleep because he regurgitates so much.

Anyone know if a chiro can help with this at all? We're going in the morning so I'm going to ask... I sure hope so!

Reflux often does not show up until 2-3 weeks of age..... so if you feel like the baby has 'developed' this later that's probably why.

Chiropractors can sometimes help with reflux it depends on the cause of it, my chiro did not find anything wrong with my baby so couldn't help his reflux. Some babe's do much better after an adjustment though, so it's definitely worth a try.

You all might try googling home remedies or such for reflux, I think besides the elevating for 30 mins after a feed, burping often, and sleeping on a elevation, there may be something such as maalox or such over the counter that 'might' help but I don't know anything about it and you'd have to do a bit of research to make your own decisions.

Some babies will refuse to feed because they associate pain with food, BUT some do the opposite and want to eat all the time to comfort the pain. Either way they can gain slowly or gain weight exceedingly fast, both are 'normal' responses to reflux.

AAM:
Samuel is gradually showing improvement on the meds, but we still have our rough times. He's already starting to get into attachment issues too I think, because he is not nearly as happy with DH then he is with me.. sigh.. I'd like a break more often but the stinker begs to nurse all the time if he isn't with me (okay well he does that too even if he is with me!).

Thanks for the info, Rae. I hope Samuel continues to improve with the meds he's on.

i think we have a case of reflux here too... not insanely severe, but he definitely screams in pain a couple times per day. i feel so bad for him!

he wants to eat constantly, and then freeks out during eating - he guzzles desperately and then pops off and cries. arching back constantly, sometimes peacefully, sometimes with a scrunched face cry. sleeps best in swing, lting with me in the bed brings on constant fussing and swallowing in his sleep. i am so bummed i cant nurse lying down... im exhausted and need to at least put my head down!

no spit up though... this is why i doubted it for so many weeks, but now i am reading that is possible. sometimes he has lots of curds in his mouth. ick.

i am so hesitant to go the medication route.... we are going to give the techniques a try... also using gripe water and colic tabs with some success.

hang in there mamas! i am encouraged to know others are struggling as well - makes me feel less alone.

Ahh we are stuck in a viscious cycle over here.. Samuel starts to reflux then wants to nurse to comfort it, then he's refluxing again.... over and over. I've just given him to DH in hopes that he can get him to sleep. I'm so exhausted .

And it's tearing me up how much pain he seems to be in !!

Rae, I'm sorry to hear of the ongoing frustrations...have any of the techniques you've tried helped at all? We are thinking of giving her the Zantac she was prescribed...don't know if it's a solution or just a band-aid, though.

Yes it all helps a little.. but I think at least at this point my Samuel must have it fairly bad. I'm hoping as his medication gets into his system further (it's supposed to take 2 weeks to give it's full effect) he'll be doing better.

Meanwhile we do all the at-home stuff we can find, and try try to comfort him as he cries .

Obviously (since I already have) if I were you I'd definitely give the meds a try. With my first kid who had reflux it was an almost instant change, so it can be a huge help sometimes.

My twins both have reflux too. It makes it hard for them to sleep peacefully - and, thus, me too! Poor kiddos... I have been trying to find a formula that is better... we're on our third one! They are also on Zantac but I'm not sure it's working. DH wants to keep them on it a little longer to see if it needs time to become effective.

Hugs to everyone!! The babes are lucky to have us to lay on, rock them and comfort them - that's the best medicine!

Hopefully, it's gets better for all of us...

Just thought I'd give a long over-due update on my baby:

My baby has been on Prevacid since he was 4 weeks old, it took TWO weeks before we noticed a difference, and even at that it was just a 'help' didn't take care of it. So we had his dose raised (he started on 1 quarter pill a day at 4 weeks old/ 9lbs 5.5oz) to half a pill (1 quarter twice a day) around 7 weeks old I think. Yesterday I saw the doctor again and we discussed how he still has hours of fussing/screaming and still spits up a lot.

So the doctor has added an additional medication that works differently it's called 'Metoclopramide' he has to take 0.8 ml 4 times a day aprox. 30mins before meals (fun when your BF'ng on demand lol). He's 9 weeks old now and around 11 lbs I 'think', and he's only on his 2nd day of this treatment, so far it's made him sleepy (side effect) but he has spit up less.

Anyway my kid is now on two meds for his reflux, besides sleeping him upright in his crib (he has a tucker sling/plus wedge to keep him elevated), and/or upright on me.

Also you all might check out this web-site: http://www.marci-kids.com/medications.html for info on different reflux meds for babies and what/how they work.

Calla was diagnosed with reflux yesterday at her WBV. I feel like such a crappy mom because it never occurred to me that she might have reflux or even that something was wrong.

In fact I was initially pretty sure that this was an incorrect diagnosis, but as I researched and thought about it, I realized that the diagnosis made a lot of sense. Now I feel really guilty for not putting it all together on my own. I just thought she was a clingy baby who didn't like to be on her back and loved to eat/suck. The spitting up and vomiting weren't overly frequent, so that didn't set off any alarm bells. And so on... I'll not ramble.

There's nothing I can do about the last few weeks (except feel terrible), so now I'm just trying to learn as much as I can and do everything I can to make Calla feel better.

I'm really thankful that this thread is here! There are some great resources and tips. I hope everyone's LOs are feeling better.

Don't feel bad Catherine - it sounds like Calla didn't exhibit the "classic" symptoms. Neither did Miles. He wasn't a big puker or screamer and he too hated to be on his back. We just started Meds a week ago, even though I knew it was reflux from week 3. I was so against medication, I kept trying to soothe him with the natural methods and I actually kept him in pain for those 3 weeks. Once we got the meds, he was a completely different kid! I didn't realize all the fussing was also related to the reflux... he started smiling and responding to us and the world around him instead of constantly squirming and making faces in pain. He is sleeping 4-5 hours at a time instead of 45 minutes!

Did you decide to do any meds? We didn't go with antacids b/c we felt they masked the problem, but instead went it "Reglan" the same drug sonshine rae's little angel is on. It helps move everything in his digestive system.

Good Luck!

Rae - we are also on Medoclopromide (Reglan) and it seems to be working. Our NP prescribed it to be administered "as needed" or when he is already in pain, but that seemed cruel and was not working, so now we give him .75 ml every 6 hours or so. If he is having a good day and doing well, we skip a dosage in the daytime, but never at night, that's the worst time. How much do you give Samuel before each feeding?

It seems to be working for Miles! See my above post to crosscat. He is so much happier. We still have "fits" (gagging and sputtering and couging from a small bit of vomit he brings up and tries to swallow) and waking up crying in pain, but they have lessened significantly, and w only have one or two "bad" days per week instead of 5-7!!

I hope its working for your little one...
