Yesterday I had an ultrasound showing three follicles, the largest of which was 18.5. We'd been planning to do an IUI, and my nurse asked me to come back in today to do another ultrasound and the hcg shot in preparation for an IUI on Friday. But, when I had the ultrasound today, the 18.5 follicle seemed to have disappeared. Yet, there was no fluid showing ovulation had occurred. Has anyone ever heard of something like this?! They don't seem to think that the ultrasound yesterday was a misreading. I still have a couple small follicles, but they're too small for using the hcg shot. My nurse gave us the option of doing an IUI anyway on Friday, just in case I did ovulate, but I decided to pass on this round. Not feeling too optimistic.

That doesn't really sound weird at all.
I missed my IUI last cycle for a similar reason. I had a 14.5mm follie on day 12. When I went in on day 13, it was gone but they did see a Corpus Luteum cyst. For me it could have been premature ovulation b/c the follie wasn't at 18mm. It sounds like you ovulated with a mature 18mm follie. Did you take an OPK? That can warn you that you're going to ovulate.
You won't always see the corpus luteum right away after you ovulate. Sometimes you can see the follie collapsing, so it's a little unusual not to see that or a CL cyst, but not impossible.
You probably could have still done the IUI as the egg lasts up to 24 hours and you probably just ovulated.
This last cycle, I made the RE give me Antagon to prevent a premature ovulation, so I did Follistim and a trigger shot as well. I had a good sized 19.5mm follie on the IUI day and didn't ovulate until 40 hours after the trigger. I'm still in the 2ww from that.

Thanks, that's really helpful. It just seemed odd that they didn't seem to see any indication of ovulation, only that the follicle was gone. But maybe as you say, it doesn't necessarily show right away. I guess we'll be looking toward the next cycle. Thanks for your reply!
