what would be the differnce in say a sigg to a lesser expensive brand? i found one from rite aid that was aluminum. Is this kind bad? also their is a brand of camping gear that has a cooler with the aluminum bottle that looks very similar. are these any differnt?

Stainless definitely. Aluminum is linked to alzheimer's, etc. In the 70's my mom moved away from using aluminum for cooking/drinking. I would invest in stainless hands down.

so he said i would be better with glass. but trying to find a portable glass cup is not working out. we have switched to him to drinking out of glasses at home now but i am still working on the "to go" cups.

I bought Kleen Kanteens for my toddlers- the have advent sippy spouts. They are fantastic! The Kleen Kanteen is stainless steel and is so easy to keep clean. I wish I had known about them when I bought Siggs for DH and I.
But a word of warning- just watch your toes- when they chuck those cups you know it.

I went with Thermos Foogo cups for DS - we have two sippy's and one of their straw cups. He really likes the straw though he still usese the sippys some too. Their great - break proof, stainless steel inside, leak proof, etc. For me and DH we have Guyot Designs water bottles - they're about the same size/shape as Nalgene bottles (so our water filters and such fit on them), but are stainless steel. And they're actually slightly bigger too (38 oz).

Stay way from Siggs!!!!
They are overpriced and poorly made. They are ALUMINUM and have a PLASTIC lining on the inside (that may or may not contain BPA) that breaks down and leaches into your beverage. They say it doesn't, but my bottles all developed a strange flavor once they were a couple years old. Except for my son's which didn't get used as often.
We also had a cheapo knock off sigg, and I NEVER noticed a difference and I think we paid $7 for it.
Klean Kanteens are incredibly superior. They are made really well, and they are a family business based out of Chico, CA.
Our Siggs dented really easily and the paint chipped off of them. The Klean Kanteens don;t dent easily at all.
If you aren't getting a KK I would just get a cheapo bottle. The only difference between that and a Sigg is the plastic lining.
We just got rid of 4 sigg bottles (after using them for 3 years) and switched to the Klean Kanteens.
I really wish we never would have gotten the sigg bottles. What a waste of $$

SIGGs do *not* have a plastic liner. It's a water-based liner. It doesn't deteriorate. SIGGs are made in Germany and Switzerland, where the regulations are MUCH more strict than in the US. (This I know because we used to live in Germany.) The SIGGs are perfectly safe. And they are not made in China. KK are made in China!!

Have you been personally assured by the company that there is ZERO plastic in the liner?I'd bet my life there is some plastic in the lining. And what if the lining gets scratched anyhow? Then you are exposed to the aluminum, and to whatever "secret" chemicals are in the lining.
Because of the lack of disclosure on siggs part -- I have personally chosen to stay away from this product.

I prefer stainless steel, but all in all the best thing to store or drink out of would probably be glass. However, there isn't a huge market for glass water bottles.

I agree. At home -- we drink only out of glass (from the age of 1 up -- prior to 1, it's just nursing anyhow : )
But for school, travel, being out-and-about -- Funtainers (stainlesssteel) is the way to go!!!! We go through about 1 per 1.5 years per child. That's only $15 every 18 months per child!!! (As long as you don't put them in the dishwasher).

We love the Thermos Funtainers. They are about $15 bucks at Target. They are stainless steel with a silicone straw. The old ones had a two piece straw that was very easy for the child to take apart. The newer ones have an improved design.
And check your Sigg's. I was eyeing one at Whole Foods and it says "Responsibly Made in China." I have a Sigg from a year ago that is Swiss made. Maybe the newer ones are made in China. Sad.
