Angela, I have read others of your posts here on MDC and I think you are very thoughtful and informed, so please don't think I'm attacking you out of hand. I thought, though, that I should question you about the second risk factor that you mentioned. I'm not sure that babies in daycare are under considerably more stress than babies who stay home with their mamas from all that I have read, assuming they are getting love, attention and care with their day care provider. I am a full-time student but am lucky enough to have family to take care of my lo when I have class. Yet I can imagine how working moms might bristle at this suggestion, especially when there aren't any scientific studies to back it up--that I'm aware of, anyway.

As to the first and third points you make, though--I absolutely agree. So, go on girl, explain your point to me! Maybe I misunderstood...
Actually there ARE studies to show it. I don't have time to look right now, but it was in the news a few years back. Babies in full-time daycare show increased levels of cortisol- indicating stress.

Edited to add: not the study itself, but an article that references it:

Did he mention anything about those 2 specifically? TI"d really love to know what he said, if anything, about all the controversy about the Prevnar vaccine and the new strains that aren't covered in the vax. Thanks!!
He recommends those for babies that are in daycare. He does not recommend them for SAHM babies or toddlers over the age of 2. He talked about serotype replacement and the fact that we have pretty much wiped out the strains in the current vaxes and now more strains are popping up. He said he wasn't sure if we created a problem by vaxing but it looks like now we will constantly have to update the vaccine schedule to cover these new strains. Not a good idea IMO. He mentioned the link between prevnar and ear infections and there is a great Dr. Tenpenny article on that if you want me to dig it up for you just pm me. He also said there are different types of meningitis and only 1 type is really bad but not usually fatal in children over 2. The other types you don't even treat really. I don't know much about meningitis so I'm not sure how accurate his thoughts were.

I agree that the whole babies in daycare is stressful seems rather offending since I WOH and DS is in a daycare situation with a SAHM. But I think there is some truth to it. However, I would not vax just because DS is in daycare. He is happy and healthy and never once been sicker than a runny nose.

Childcare is childcare is childcare, no matter whether its in a daycare center or at a church nursery. I work part-time and my children are in daycare approx. 15-20 hours a week. To be honest my DS has caught more "bugs" at the church nursery than he ever has at daycare. Remember, just because you maybe a SAHM doesn't mean that the rest of the kids in the church nursery are. Just something to think about.
I don't think 1 hour at the church nursery is at all the same as 40 hours at daycare. Most SAHM do playdates or LLL groups or whatever that total 10-15 hours or so each week where their babies are exposed to others and he doesn't recommend vaxing in that situation. Seems odd. But as I mentioned before...DS is in daycare all week and I still don't vax.

Just had a thought on church daycare vs professional daycare.

If a church daycare is well-run and the volunteers/staff are well-trained, no problem. But if people don't know the steps needed to avoid babies and toddlers spreading illness...

all it takes is one person who doesn't wash hands after a diaper change, for example.

Any situation where a mother is with their child lessens the problems because only one person will be doing the personal stuff--diaper changes and nose wipes and handwashing.

Of course any situation where kids are sharing toys and interacting means a certain amount of disease circulation.

The best approach is to do your absolute best to keep the immune system functioning and maintain a reasonable level of cleanliness.

How do you know where the bugs came from?
