Circular knitting help!

I'm trying to knit that punk soaker pattern that everyone loves, and no matter how loosely I cast on, my stitches get so tight I can't get them from needle to needle! I'm trying the newborn size, which calls for casting 56 stitches onto a 16 inch circular needle. It's like there's just not enough stitches for that length of needle! Circular needle is size 9, which I suspect may be too big. Has anyone else had this problem? Any tips?

Try to cast on the stitches very loosely and once you get past your first row there will be more "give", does that make sense?

Better yet use a longer circ and do the magic loop method way easier

The cast on will be looser if you leave space between each loop as you cast it on but 56 stitches with worsted is not going to go around a 16" needle. The newborn(and small) needs to either be worked on DPNs, the 2 circ method or with magic loop.

And more than likely, as you already suspect, a size nine needle is too big.
