It is a shot from Melanie Falick and Kristen Nichol's book Knitting for Babies. The Aran Pullover. So strange

I KNEW that picture looked familiar when I got the issue a few days ago, but couldn't figure out why!

You're right - kind of strange.

ETA - especially strange b/c they list the baby's name and the photographer in the magazine - so maybe someone on staff simply had an in with the photog? Weird.

Yeah, I wondered if maybe the photographer and/or baby is a Mothering family member? Curious...

That is weird... I wonder what the story is behind that?

not strange at all - the photog probably had the picture available on one of the stock photography sites where magazines/catalogs can purchase pictures for use.

Motheing does not shoot its own covers usually from what I understand. They just use stock photos. There was one cover a while ago that I have seen in seveal different places (its a great picture). not at all strange really. it does howeve give one a strange ince of deja vu.

I am not surprised that Mothering uses stock photos, but I AM surprised that Melanie Falick didn't buy exclusive rights to the photos taken for the book.

And, yeah, it does elicit a strange sense of de ja vue!

I know it's so, so common, and in fact, I worked in commercial photography for a few years, but I still find it a little off-putting. Call me sentimental, but I like the idea of unique products, especially things as identifying as photographs. For example, I wonder how it would play out if the baby on the cover of a magazine that promotes breastfeeding was also used in a Nestle ad or something like that...
