Crochet ?

I want to crochet these two patterns

Baby Pinafore

Baby Girl Sleeper

But they both call for sport weight yarn and i only have worsted weight, will it really matter if i just use the worsted weight as long as i get the correct gauge?

Well, the baby girl sleeper doesn't have a gauge. I have made dresses loosely based off that pattern with worsted weight yarn & a J hook that made wonderful dresses for my (then) two-year-old. If you want a truly "baby" size on that one, I'd suggest using an H hook with WW yarn; that should keep it closer to the right size.

Generally speaking, yes, if you get the correct gauge, you can use whatever yarn you have. BUT bear in mind that doing so may well change the drape of the finished object. This is especially likely if you have to drop the hook size as well to get the gauge right. (Think of how different something crocheted in WW yarn with, say, a J or K hook looks from something crocheted in the same yarn with a G hook.) It might wind up being too stiff. No way to know until you try, really, and keep in mind that some worsted weight yarn works up almost like sport weight--Caron's Simply Soft is one for this.

I'm not familiar with the pinafore, but I do want to reassure you that the sleeper set--at least, the dress part, which is the only part I've actually bothered making--is a very forgiving pattern.

Bev's got a few very nice baby things up at her site that are made with worsted weight yarn. In particular, you can make a nice dress based off this pattern. I'd suggest joining it after row 7 and then doing something like making row 8 a 5-DC shell (you know, 5 double crochets in the same stitch) in every 3rd stitch or so--this will make a full skirt. You can also use the open shell pattern from the skirt of the Baby Girl Sleeper, if you want. Or just add in a few extra DCs if you want a full skirt (go straight down & you'll have a nice nightgown!).

This pattern calls for WW yarn, but I haven't made it so I cannot vouch for it. The baby shirt I've made several times; it's very easy & there aren't any mistakes in the pattern.

Totally makes sense. Bev's patterns are really great for newbie crocheters.
