I have a pattern for just plain garter stick blocks, but I want to do something a little more I think.

One side is stockinette (?) stitch, garter stitch, basket weave, ribbed, etc.
But there is no pattern...do you think I really need one? Just measure them or what?
I would love to do letters (to spell out DDs name), but I REALLY don't think I can do them without a pattern.
Anyone have a pattern or able to tell me how to stitch DDs name?
