Very gassy baby

Hi! I am a mother of four, so I have "some" experience, but nevertheless need advice! . My fourth son is one month old, but has gas like I have not experienced with my others. He is BF and seems to have gas 24/7. He grunts and farts all day and all night whether sleeping or awake. The farts are so loud too! I thought it might be something I am eating, but most of my research steers towards the idea that only milk proteins can affect breast milk and " gassy" foods I eat should not affect baby. I stopped milk and dairy for 3 days, but no change in the gas. In fact, he seemed to get worse for those days! He did have green poops for 2 weeks, so I thought perhaps he was getting too much foremilk, so I fed on each breast for 2-3 feedings to ensure hindmilk was being eaten. No change in poops and no change in gas. I also started Bio Gai, the infant pro-biotic around 3 weeks ago, but no change in the gas either. So, I just resumed life as usual - eating like I normally do, but still giving the probiotic. Now at 6 weeks, his poops have turned back to buttery yellow, so perhaps he had a bug or perhaps it was just his immature digestive system in relation to the green poops. However, he is still so gassy and it I am wondering if this is normal? He does seem to be uncomfortable and is a very fussy baby 90% of the time. Any advice?

My favorite book is the Nursing Mother's Companion and she details foods to eliminate. I would eliminate caffeine, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, cucumbers, curry, strong spices, all citrus for three days and see how that goes. Then I'd add them back in one day at a time and see if any of them are a trigger. You can keep a journal of what you eat and babies mood - usually fussing will begin 1-8 hours after ingesting an irritant. I've read that dairy can take 2 weeks to be eliminated from breastmilk so you may need to abstain longer with that.

I couldn't eat broccoli w/ DS until he was about 6 months - the poor guy screamed and screamed if I ate it. I just came to the conclusion that DD cannot tolerate caffeine - for 3 months she's been fussy during the day and fine at night BECAUSE I DRINK COFFEE IN THE MORNING! I too am not an unexperienced breastfeeder (is that a word?) but I didn't figure it out until last week and finally my withdrawal headaches are gone and she is happy.

Good luck!

You wrote my story!

DD is six weeks. She wakes every 10-30 minutes all night grunting and pushing until she finally starts crying in pain. She is not a cry-er, just grunty. I am so exhausted from never getting more than a couple of hours of sleep each night, usually only when my husband takes her in the morning before he goes to work. During the day I have a four year old and a one year old to care for. It's insane right now.

I don't eat any of the foods mentioned by the PP. I'm checking into the latch. I tried the football hold this morning and there seemed to be a better latch. She has a hard time getting her mouth open very wide. Also, after an internet search, I burped her every 1-2 minutes during nursing to keep the air form getting too deep before bringn it up. I actually got more air out than I do when waiting til feeding is over. So we'll see if these things help.

I hope you get more replies on this. It's agonizing...
