Mattress help!

We're looking for a solution to our mattress issue -- we have a new twin bed for our toddler but can't put it together until we find a mattress that can work for it. I am not comfortable with a regular mattress, because of the chemical off-gassing.

I had found a less frightfully expensive organic mattress for it, only now with the huge hit we took from the stock market, we can't afford it. Her crib mattress was organic. I very much want her twin one to be too. But the cheapest one I found was still over $400. We just can't do that. :-\

But I don't know anything about mainstream mattresses and which might be least harmful.

So I found that apparently wrapping the mattress with food grade polyethylene works to prevent any off-gassing, but it is literally like sleeping on plastic in terms of it making noise when you move. Still, it's a lot cheaper than an organic mattress. But now I'm assuming I'd have to get a mattress pad or something for it and if so, what kind would that cancel out the plastic-y sound? Plus it would have to be something organic or natural, in order to not add to the off-gassing thing we're trying to prevent. I was thinking some kind of wool type pad but the ones I'm finding are as expensive as the damn organic mattress!

Suggestions? Or is there a cheaper wool type alternative (wool is naturally flame retardant so no chemicals are needed). Or something else to help cut down on the plastic sound? I've never slept on a bed that had any sort of plastic wrap on it so haven't a clue what would work best.

And, the other problem is one website suggested that if you wrap the whole mattress in plastic (even though it's the type of plastic that doesn't give off fumes itself) then that is trapping in potential moisture and could lead to mildew inside the mattress. But wouldn't there have to be moisture there first? I've read very conflicting things about this. Anyone know?

Apparently it's a big thing in New Zealand, to use this type of plastic (called polythene I think, over there, but same thing) for SIDS prevention on crib mattresses. But this is the only place I found that offers covers for twin and larger sized mattresses:

Does anyone know anything about these?

Thanks in advance.

Nobody? *sigh* I thought surely someone here would know about these mattress wraps.

I don't know anything about those covers. They sound awful. My understanding is that latex mattresses don't off-gas, and are very healthful and comfortable, but not cheap. I found one source online that offers the best prices I have seen. Here's a link:

I hope you find something that works great for your child!

They used to make mattresses stuffed with straw. Not sure if you can still buy them that way, but it wouldn't off-gas (not sure on the flame retardency issue though -- they might have to add something). IKEA has mattresses that are not treated with PDBEs, but they do treat them with boric acid, which is apparently also bad (carcinogenic). We are kind of in a similar position. Maybe you could find a used latex mattress?

Well, since it looks as if the price of a new mattress, plus the cover, plus some kind of wool pad to reduce the noise of the crinkly plastic would all end up close to the price of the organic one we were originally looking at.

I'm just going to pray that we get enough cash for the holidays and birthdays to help us afford it. Otherwise I'm not sure what we'll do.

oh, i see you have one on the way... if i were you, i'd keep the toddler on the organic crib mattress until you can afford the organic twin. i am assuming you have a bassinet or something for the new baby? you could just put the crib mattress on the floor in the meantime...
