And it's horrible. Especially in front. He looks ridiculous. : Can anyone share any tips?

What about cutting it all very short? Do you use a shaver that comes with attachments? If so, use one of the shorter blades. It might be the only way if it is that bad.

BTW, how did he react? I have a 16 yo ds as well, he won't even let me try to cut his hair.

Edited to say, duh, I see he is 16 MONTHS. I guess he doesn't really care now does he? LOL Just try to fix it the best you can and hope it grows quickly!

I gave DD a haircut last week, just cut her some bangs, and they look just awful too!

Oh well i guess its just another one of those things that we will eventually eaither a) get better at or b) not care so much about.

LOL!

BTDT

I try to "adjust" a little at a time, one snip here and one snip there whenever he happens to be sitting still for a little while and the scissors are nearby. After a few more weeks of adjustments it might look better (I hope).

I would either take him to a professional or get a buzzer with the different sized attachments. You can do shorter on the sides and in the back, and transition to a bit longer on top.
Good luck mama!

vilaura - Yeah at least he's not a teenager. LOL! That would be way worse. As it is I'm not too concerned about my toddler's looks...people probably understand that they can be squirmy during haircuts.

It's slightly embarrassing but not actually hideous I guess. We unexpectedly had to watch another toddler last night so I haven't done anything about it yet. Maybe tonight we will take out DH's clipper and see if he will allow us to cut it as long as we can with the clipper. Just to even it out.

But I was also looking for advice for next time. Practice? Does anyone cut their young kid's hair? Should I just let it get shaggy and only occasionally trim around the ears and above the eyes? I kind of want to learn to do a decent job myself rather than going to a professional.

Maybe maybe maybe clippers will be the answer.

Kids cuts are generally a lot cheaper than adult (at least half the price IME), so to me it's worth it, especially since it's a rare event (and they have impossible, curly hair). We actually don't get many around here. DS was 3 when he got his first hair cut and DD just got her first cut a week ago at 4yo 3months . DS lets his grow really long as he likes it like that, although he's getting a cut today.

Does he have curly hair? That makes it tricky.

I would suggest getting clippers or a haridressing kit (cheap at retail stores and they usually have a book which tells you how to do hair).

Thanks bwylde. His hair is actually pretty straight. It only starts to curl a little bit at the ends when it gets long. But it grows pretty fast! This is already his third haircut (the other two were done by our neighbor who cuts hair but she has moved). It's not exclusively the money that makes me want to learn how, but the inconvenience of having to go get a haircut, and just the satisfaction of knowing how to do it myself too (supposing I ever get it right!).

Uh, yeah, could you imagine doing a bad job on a sixteen year old, ack. That would be a true tragedy, at least to him! I totally understand wanting to do it yourself.

I would pick up the home haircutting kit. Mine came with a DVD of instructions. I just use it on my hubby as he's the only one who'll let me near his head anymore, lol. I just shave his head with the shortest attachment so easy peasy. Working on a toddler is much more of a challenge for sure!
