looking for chicken pox - Page 4

i am discouraged

well, my dd was exposed 14 days ago and had flu-like symptoms starting last thursday right through monday... i thought this was it! then yesterday she felt well (her tonsils were swelled, but that's it) and no bumps. today, she felt 100% and, again no bumps. i practically looked with a magnifying glass... she doesn't even have a blemish. nothin!

i don't know what to think. besides her tonsils looking a little swollen, there is absolutely no sign of anything out of the ordinary. any opinions? do you think she could still break out in bumps even though other symptoms have subsided?

the child she was exposed to had only 3 or 4 bumps total and no other symptoms, but was verified by her doctor that she had cp. i wonder if it's possible my dd could have gotten a half-version or something? or maybe she coincidentally caught a flu. i just don't know what to think...

(i have been looking for 3 years and i thought this was finally it -- i can't believe this is so hard!)

Less than one year old it doesn't confer total immunity (so she might get it again later, but it will likely be a pretty mild case the second time around).

I had shingles when my dds were 2.5 and 6 mos and passed it to the baby while nursing and then she passed it to her sister. Did I mention it was while my husband was on a 2.5 week business trip and the vaccine was just coming out and so none of my friends would visit and all my family lived out of town?! OY!

Anyway, when our next dd got cp, the "baby" was now 6 and got about 5 pox on her arm and that was it.

Looking for cp near Boston..........

we are definitely looking for chicken pox, but i don't want to put myself at risk right now.

Call your doctor and ask. Then you'll know for sure.

Mayree...

The Dr. Sears website says
Quote:
"The incubation period (the time from when your child is exposed to the time he will break out in spots) is generally 14 days. It can be as early as 7 days and as long as 21 days."
so there's still a chance.

It is frustrating chasing the pox around (we're been trying for a few years too), but glad to hear your DD feels better

A Possible Exposure

Hi everyone,

My son, Tobias, and I hung out with friends the other day who had a confirmed case of active CP. It was fun trying to get them to play and kiss and hug...we did give Tobias the fork and leftover noodles of the child with CP and had him carry his flemmy tissue to the garbage, as well as just the general play...so fingers crossed in a couple of weeks we will know...we hope to have a chicken pox party for you all down here in New Bedford.

Funny, the next day when I mentioned to a friend our exposure adventures she asked me if they had shared a lollypop...duh! I never even thought of that, what a great idea...so there is a good tip for you all trying to get the pox for your kids.

Take care and I will keep you updated.

PS To the pp regarding CP in pregnancy...in early pregnancy if you have CP there is a chance you could pass it onto the baby and the baby could have congenital malformations as a result, although this is rare. But if you have had CP or the shot then it is usually fine to be exposed as you may have immunity and therefore you will not get sick and pass it to your baby. If you are at all concerned you can get bloodwork done to measure your Varicella titers to see if you are still immune and thus put your mind at ease.

I've been to 6 pox parties now. Five of them were successful in transmitting the pox, one I never heard what happened. My children have never got it. I don't think it is an automatic hit even if you get the timing right.

Hi!
I started a separate thread, but wanted to post it here as well. If anyone on here is also on the Yahoo Group Natural Immunity, check the messages from today, because someone in Northern RI has a daughter with chicken pox. I emailed the mom to see if I can pass her info along to anyone who PMs me. I'll post again if I get a response. I can't expose my son right this minute because we're going to Florida in a week, but hopefully we can keep it going here in RI!

It sounds like pox may be around!
We are very interested. I am also pregnant but I know I had full blown pox when I was 8 so from what Paige said there is no risk to the baby.
Please keep posting!

the mom who has a daughter with pox in Northern RI has told me it's okay to send her info to people who want to get together. i believe her daughter started showing pox yesterday, so the sooner, the better.
PM me and i'll send along her info.
thanks!

We're game here. I'd probably bring just the baby and 2yo along to a pox party and hope the 2yo gets it and then passes it to his big brothers though.

fingers crossed here too!
I would drive if it works out
Bravo on the lollypop trick
I will have to remember that

Ooh, if you bring it to Mystic, we'd love to come share a lollypop! We went to one pox party with no results. My daughter had just weaned at the time, though, so hopefully she'd be more likely to get it now. RI is a little far for us (in the NY's lower Hudson Valley) but Mystic is not. Here's hoping, and thanks to everyone for sharing! -Carolyn in Cold Spring, NY

Hi all,
here's the feedback I got from the natural immunity yahoo group about exposing kids:
(by the way, if anyone wants to join the natural immunity group, just go to yahoo groups, and type in natural immunity as the group you're searching for. it's a nationwide group. i recommend getting messages as they come in, rather than the daily digest, because time is of the essence with pox).

Here are some good articles....I'm sure others here have more advice.

Hi Danielle,

For some reason the links to the articles did not work for me...can you repost the whole link this time?

Thanks!

PS Today, according to the average...would be the start of the time Tobias might show pox...we will know by the end of next week if he got it...I will keep you all updated...haven't seen him yet this morning...of course the one time he sleeps in I am wide awake!
