Years ago, a woman i worked with said her son thought the second harry potter movie was so lame. And he hadnt read the book, so he therefore felt the books were lame too. I think they did a pretty good job on the movies (well, dont get me started on what they left out of PoA)...but yeah, a giant talking spider might seem lame if you dont have the context.

Definitly book first for me. I actually don't like seeing movies of the books I've read becuase I like to think of the characters like I imagined them and not like some actor -- it ruins the book for me. Also, The movies are NEVER as good as the books IMO. The Feast of Love by Charles Baxter is one of my favorite books but I didn't love the movie at all. I really love the book The Secret Life of Bee's- I probably won't see the movie.

I just saw this movie and felt the same way! The book was so much better.

I will always read the book first. I am usually disappointed in the movie version, plus if I see it first I picture the movie when I am reading. I would rather use my imagination.

I have to read the book before I see the movie or I likely will never read it. It's usually best for me to read the book long before seeing the movie- then the movie reminds me of how much I loved the book. If it's too close together and then I end up comparing the two.

I've always read the book first, except for The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I still think the books are better & every time I watch the movies, I'm more disappointed in them & find more things wrong. I doubt I'll watch the movie first again.

Definitely see the film first, although that's not usually how it turns out.

Once you've read a book, you've already got pictures of the characters and scenes in your head, and the film never matches. Plus, the book is almost always better, so if you read it first, the film is bound to be a disappointment.

Book first. I usually find the film confusing because they leave out so much if I have not read the book first.

The ONLY movies I'll watch are the Harry Potter movies. Other than that, if I've read the book, I forego the movie.

If I had to choose, though, I'd do book then movie.
Most of the time I skip the movie completely. The movies are usually so disappointing after the book that it's just a waste of time and money to bother watching them. Harry Potter is an exception.

The only ones I can think of off of the top of my head where I've watched the movie but never read the book are the Bourne Identity books.

I always read the book first.

I love rereading books, but don't generally rewatch movies as much. I would rather ruin a bit of a movie (one viewing) than ruin my enjoyment of a book (many times).

If I watch the movie first, the images from it become the story. It is hard for me to then really imagine as much in the book. The other way I can be disappointed but still enjoy both.

That is one series of books/movies that it doesn't matter as much. By the third one all they share is a title.

Hmmm, I'm all over the place LOL

In general, I prefer to get lost in a book and let my imagination go wild, but I can think of different categories:

Books/movies that I thought were about the same:
"Where the Heart is"
"Jane Eyre" (Masterpiece Theatre version) - not a movie, but still fits IMO

Books that were way better than the movie:
"Jurassic Park"
"The Notebook"

Movies that I thought were better than the book:
"Contact" (Jodie Foster is incredible!!! great casting all around)
"Phantom of the Opera"
"V for Vendetta"

I just read and enjoyed "The Friday Night Knitting Club" and heard its going to be made into a movie with Julia Roberts as the lead. I am very interested in this one!

I'm another one that prefers to read the book first then see the film of the same name but then again isn't that what a bookgodess would do?

I'm trying to think of what film I've seen first before I read the book and I'm drawing a blank.
