Take your child to vote with you!

It's a great learning opportunity for them!

I remember when I went to the voting station with my dad and although it was not terribly exciting, I remember feeling that it was a very important thing that he was doing.

My dd is in 2nd grade and has been following the elections both locally and nationally and it's been neat to see her develop her own political views. I've been letting her watch the debates and she sees the signs and the local ads for propositions. We are going to wake up very early tomorrow, get in line and she can see all the other people who think it's important enough to get up and vote. They usually have a kids voting booth there so she can cast her vote, too. I am going to tell her teacher this afternoon when I pick her up why she may be late to school (although we will be in line before 6AM so hopefully she won't be too late).

Anyway, I just wanted to encourage you to let your kids be part of our precious right to vote and maybe turn them into faithful voters as adults.

DD is 8 months, so she won't remember, but she went w/ me to vote today. The poll worker gave me an extra "I voted" sticker for her scrapbook to mark her 1st trip to the polls.

I remember going w/ my parents too. I turned 18 just after the '96 election and was mad that I couldn't vote.

Vote with kids

Hi Darshani,

I totally agree with taking kids. The big day is over, but I did take my kids this morning. They go everywhere with me. We planned to walk to the polls this morning. I got up around 7am, and got the kids up. They made VOTE NOW, and VOTE TODAY signs, which we carried with us while walking 1/4 of the mile to vote. It felt special that we walked to the polls too.

My kids are 8,8 and 12, so they have been following the election (I did manage to shelter them from the very ugly side of elections though).

When I was ready to push the VOTE button, the kids all held my elbow, and I put my index finger on the VOTE button. When I said push, they pushed. They took alot of pride in helping.

Also, we had 15 pages on the ballet, because our local elections were going on, and they learned that voting means you must be able to read, and make decisions. If you can't read and make decisions, you are left out of something very important.

I also used this time to talk about civic duty, and of course we talked alot about the women's sufferage movement of 1920. In otherwords, I explained to them that I was able to vote today, because of the dedication and hard work of other women before me.

And by the way, we were very very very pleased with the election results!!! HORRAY!

I took DS and let him push the big "Cast Vote" button.

We don't get stickers here , DS would have loved that.
