Repainting wooden blinds?

I have some wooden window blinds with large slats, good quality. We installed them in cherrywood stain to match a bedroom set we had at the time, given by my grandparents but since given back to them when the moved closer. Now we have furniture and bedroom paint that totally clashes with these blinds. We can't afford new blinds, and I like how these keep the sun out so well.

I was thinking, maybe I can hang them from the swingset outside and spray paint them white or something? Have you ever heard of something like that? My only reservation is the strings being paint-glued to the slats and then it won't work or will look awful.

The other option is to put cheap curtains up from IKEA or someplace but they won't keep the sun out so well. I like to open the windows up on nice days and close them completely during the heat of the day and at night b/c we have a street lamp that shines in.

Any ideas? Am I crazy for even considering painting them?

I would give it a go. I've never done it personally but I've seen them do this kind of project on those home improvement TV shows.

Are the cords linking the slats in good condition? If not, then you could tear the strings off, redo the slats like you want, and then get them restrung..

Also, if they are wood- I would be really tempted to just restain rather than paint, but..
