It's awful. Here's the website she promotes.

Is it just because I'm a parent that I seem bombarded with this junk or is it more intense now than ever?

I can't even begin to imagine the lies that we'd find in that website.

I think it's more intense now...They realize that they are loosing the war. More and more parents are starting to question...I mean chicken pox vaccine...are you kidding me? I think that one was their biggest blunder...it got people who never thought twice about shooting their kids up to stop and.. Think they are in damage control mode now.

As far as Ms. Peet...anyone with half a brain realizes that she is a pawn of Paul Profit...I mean Offit....those who don't get it are going to vaccinate anyway. I think it's a wash.

Unfortunately, I don't think the average mainstream mom knows/realizes that. They hear their Doc say vaccines, and a celebrity say vaccines and don't think twice.

I wonder how many people know why CP was even added??? (they didn't want moms taking off too much time to stay home with kids...wish I still had the link for that).

ITA...I just mean that moms that would take her seriously are going to vax anyway and weren't even questioning it in the first place. People that do question vaccines are not going to just say..oh, a celeb said it's safe so they must be...people who are questioning it are smarter than that and are going to look into it farther than a celeb that comes off as a pharma shill.

Crazy. Totally crazy. But I don't for one second believe that a moms work schedule was their main concern. It is and always will be the almighty $$$$$$$$$$$$. Big pHARMa kills to get richer.

too much time off work = lost $ and productivity

Even with uncomplicated cases, children with chickenpox miss an average of 5-6 days of school, and parents or other caregivers miss 3-4 days of work to care for sick children.
Certainly a reason, even if not the main reason.

Using a celebrity helps feed into the fear. I am friends with someone who's concerned about babies getting measles because of all the people not vaccinating. I don't think this would have necessarily been on her radar had Amanda Peet not been out there...she would have vaccinated, and not thought that much about it. If people are afraid, they might shun those who don't vaccinate, and then the pro-vaccine side will seemingly have won.

And who says those who don't vaccinate won't shun those who do? After all, they're the ones walking around shedding live viruses...

It is all in the way the discussion is framed.

Refusing vaccines can be framed as a civil rights question, as a bodily autonomy question, as a health/science question, as a religious freedome question.

Refusing vaccines, alternatively, could be framed as a public health crisis, as irresponsible parenting (like skipping carseats), as stupidity, as ignorance, and as endangerment of the children of good parents who do vax.

The main problem, if we let the pro-vaxers control the frames, is changes in the laws that force vaccination.

I wonder if that's the rationale for all the childhood disease vaxes. I mean, that's stuff couldn't be that scary and dangerous if they were having parties for them.

You know what annoys me about Amanda Peet's vax promotion? And yes, I know this is really petty...but she's totally an awful actress. I feel like saying to her, "Stop promoting Offit's agenda and go back to making the crappy movies that I can't remember the names of." Part of me wonders if this is also a career push for her, since I can't remember how long it has been since she made a movie.

Stupid, I know.

Thank you for writing this--that's exactly it.

I recommend that anyone who wants to know more about framing and how it works read something by George Lakoff. He is the expert on this topic.

Vaccine critics (notice the change from anti-vaxers) need to work on framing more than anything else.

: (I don't really purposely do this... we already don't do daycare and school for other reasons but due to my daughter's eczema, I would under no circumstances allow anyone recently vaxed with smallpox (military or high risk people) into my home.)

I was really irritated by an article a couple of weeks ago though, because they were totally pro-vac and were touting the return of measles or something like that due to the unvaccinated population. But right there in the article they stated that "almost half" of the cases were in unvaccinated children. Well, okay then what about the more than half? Seems reasonable to me to conclude that they were all vaccinated and that therefore the vaccination was completely ineffective for them!!! So roughly half the cases were vaxed and half weren't.

I absolutely CAN NOT comprehend minds like Peet's who are afraid that our kids are going to get their kids sick. If the vaccines actually prevented illnesses as they purport to do and she really believes her child is immune to said illness, what in the world is she afraid of???

I think that is the reason they told parents. The real reason that it got on the schedule is $$$$, because pharma pushed it to make more $$, and they threatened to quit producing it (in fact I think it was not available for a year or two) if it did not get on the schedule. It was basically a threat.

EWWW that website was so full of BULLLLLLLSSSSHHHH________!!!!

But it looks all official, it's filled with "studies" and "expert" opinions. Those beginning to look into vaccines will see this website and say "oh..they ARE safe". Folks like many on here who have already done HEAVY research know that's not true, but websites like this are so damaging to those just starting out in their research
