"My granddaughter is allergic to breastmilk"

I need you all to point me in the direction of studies/information that shows a child isn't allergic to mother's milk -- but rather something that's in the milk due to maternal consumption.

I had this argument with a friend who was telling me that her grand daughter is allergic to the breastmilk. She talked about a dairy allergy and how she'll have to stop nursing because she can't have the milk. Her information is all distorted and it was really frustrating to listen to. I suggested that if the baby was sensitive to dairy then mom would have to eliminate dairy from HER OWN diet. My friend's response was that her daughter didn't drink milk or eat cheese. Right, but there's dairy EVERYWHERE.

ARGH.

Can you help me out with some links? Thanks!

Does the baby have glactosemia?

I don't have any specific links but look around KellyMom. You may find something.

I would say if there's a chance of talking to the baby's mom directly try that. Information gets twisted the more people it has to go through.

A lot of doctors mistakenly assume that a dairy allergy means that babies are also allergic to human milk. My son was allergic to dairy, wheat, corn, chocolate, rice, squash, and others that he received through my milk. After going round and round with the pediatrician and gastroenterologist, they finally told me he was allergic to my milk. I demanded they send us to a pediatric allergist if they were going to diagnose him with one of the rarest food allergies in the world! : The allergist worked with us on an elimination diet that allowed me to continue nursing him. It is extraordinarily rare that a baby is allergic to human milk.

One good resource is www.kidswithfoodallergies.org. There is a breastfeeding folder there for moms trying to nurse kiddos with food allergies. Those ladies have done more research on food allergies than the pediatricians in my area!
