Sister diag. with HPV and she is thinking of Gardasil

Help I am looking for all the info I can get my hands on to help my sister to decide not to get the shot. She is scared and not well informed. I have heard too much controversy over this one and it scares me for her.

I remember reading something that said getting Gardasil when you already have HPV increases your cancer risk. Let me see if I can find something about that...

She wants Gardasil herself after being diagnosed with HPV??

Here ya go:

A PCR-based HPV detection device with provision for accurate HPV genotyping is more urgently needed now because vaccination with GardasilTM of the women who are already sero-positive and PCR-positive for vaccine-relevant genotypes of HPV has been found to increase the risk of developing high-grade precancerous lesions by 44 .6%, according to an FDA VRBPAC Background Document...
If that doesn't do it, I don't know what will. Straight from the FDA. Of course, technically I suppose it depends on what serotype she has, but even if the serotype does not match the vaccine, who knows? I wouldn't take that chance.

Thanks Ophelia. I also found in this thread, a mention of that...

http://mothering.com/discussions/sho...d.php?t=994311

Also, of all the discussion with people who have received Gardasil, not a single one, including those with prior HPV diagnosis, were tested to see if the strain(s) they have match the ones in the vaccine. So I wouldn't trust a doctor to be aware of and/or care.

Do they test people for HPV before giving the shot? Just curious.

From what I've read, most women are HPV positive sooner or later. They build antibodies and that's it.

She is most likley going to get a repeat pap in 6 months. Things might look different then.
They don't test, AFAIK. One of the reasons Gardasil is only targeted at girls is to minimize the problem of giving the vaccine to infected women.

AFAIK, the vaccine won't do anything for her, except possibly increase the risk of cancer and who-knows-what-else.

I've also read that the majority of adult sexually active women have HPV.

for the last 6 years she has told me all her test would come back with abnormal cells ;0( Now they finally tell her this. What would be the natural approach to this? Not sure yet as to what the dr's are going to say do other than like another poster said re`pap in 6 months. They mentioned freezing method to her so that new hopefully good healthy/ tissue will grow back. What's one's idea on this approach? thanks everyone for the insight on this!

What page of the document is that on? It's 68 pages long and I don't have time to read it all

Sorry, it was page 8 or 9 depending on how you are looking at the pages.

"Human papilloma virus, or HPV, is the name of a group of viruses comprising over 100 different strains discovered to date, 30–40 of which affect our reproductive tract." http://www.womentowomen.com/sexualit...arsandhpv.aspx

Gardasil claims to protect against 4 of these strains. The ones that are linked to developing cancer. Most of the HPV strains are totally harmless and as PP have said, most sexually active women have it at some point in their life. The immune system takes care of most active HPV infections within 2 years. Besides unless she knows what strain she has (which you can't know I don't think) than getting the shot now may increase her risks not lessen them. Besides being useless the vax has the most reporetd side effects of any vax introduced on the market in such a short time. I'd tell your sister get whatever treatment they reccomend (freezing or whatever) and don't stress about it.

I got nothing but commiseration for ya. My sister also has HPV and got the vax at the insistence of her doctor despite my protests. Now I just hope she keeps up on her Paps.

imo a nutritional change to avoid all hormones from meat and diary. Avoid all junk foods.

Include nuts and seeds, in particular flax, poppy, hemp, and sesame seeds in the diet. Eat mostly raw and organic.

Thanks. I printed out the section and highlighted it for future use!

Please inform your sister that there have been several reports of Guillain-Barre syndrome following Gardasil vaccination.

My SIL was dx'd with acute GBS last week. She has been through absolute hell ever since - horrible pain, paralysis, respiratory distress, back and forth to the hospital in an ambulance, and ineffective treatment so far.

The risk of this ALONE (aside from all the other risks) would deter me.
