Is it a hopeless business? How do you get them out once they've been washed in warm water?

Dawn blue concentrated dish liquid. Squirt it right on the stains and let it sit overnight. Wash in washing machine and run rinse cycle repeatedly until clear water and no bubbles.

If the dish soap doesn't work, try Goo Gone. It's not a natural product but I use it when nothing else works.

i've had some luck with fels naptha bar soap.

Dawn or oxygen bleach plus hot water.
