If You're Using a Doula At Your Birth... - Page 2

I did a Google search for "doula" + my area. I also got recommendations from LLL. You might also see if there is a local Attachment Parenting group you could get in with.

Another group that seems to get passed up is CAPPA.net CAPPA is an amazing group to find doulas, CBEs, and lactation help, as well as to find training all over the country, both at home and distance. They have a spot on their site for searching their members too.

I think you really have to go with your gut to some extent. Of course there are tons of questions to ask and you have to make sure that your doula will be able to support you with your birth intentions, but you also have to click. The first doula I interviewed was nice and experienced but I felt like I overpowered her in some way. And if I felt like that just chatting, how would it be in labour??? I ended up with someone young and hip with tattoos who had a strong personality and was strong physically (I am large and I thought "what if I need help getting up off of the toilet or something and I put the doula's back out?"). I have heard that if there was a drug available that offered all of the benefits that having a doula does, it would be unethical to not give that drug to labouring women. I am so so so pro-doula. Not pg at the moment (wish I was!!)

Although I think doulas are wonderful and I'm considering being one when my children are older....I just want to say that both of my midwives have covered the aspect of emotional support during labor and birth.

That is so cool. Most midwives are more helpful on the emotional side of things then Dr's (generally). I suppose the difference is their focus is clinical with emotions on the side, and a doula will focus solely on how you're coping, yk?

For me in particular, I also offer childbirth photography, so if someone is coping very well alone, I can step back and do photos.

^ well, they were also homebirth midwives so that may have made a difference. Your photo skills are great and I? think your fee is a steal for what you offer.
