Quarterly grade & report card grade? I'm confused.

DD received her report card today, and each subject has two grades - a "quarterly" grade and a "report card" grade.

In one subject her quarterly grade is a C, and the report card grade is an F. In another the quarterly grade is a D, report card grade is a B.
Again, in another, quarterly is B, report card is D.

What does this mean (and why would there be such big differences between the two)? Her last school just had one grade for each subject.

Are they switching systems this year?

What grade is your daughter in? I'd definitely ask the teacher(s) about that. The only thing that I can think of is that maybe the quarterly grade was a progress report mid-quarter and the report card grade is the final grade for the quarter.

Dd#1, who is in middle school, did get mid-term (mid-quarter) progress report grades and then a final report card for the quarter. The grades could, presumably, go up or down a lot if the kid stopped turning in work after the progress report, failed a lot of assignments after the progress report, or started performing a lot better after the progress report, for instance. My younger dd, who is an elementary student, just got one grade for the quarter, though.

What you describe does sound confusing!

Could quarterly be short for "quarterly exam"? Maybe they have a cumulative test at the end of each quarter.
