Gentle movies for 5 year old

Thread Starter
I like to have a few movies for family movie night but I have a hard time finding "gentle" ones. Right now I am really sick of Curious George. I find that even Nemo and Happy Feet have scenes that have scared my son - big animals eating the little animals.

Any suggestions?

There was a thread on non-violent movies for children a while back that might have some suggestions that work for you:

I have pretty sensitve kiddos, too. Some movies that have been popular around here are:

Mary Poppins
Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmas
The Sound of Music

(yes, my children have a Julie Andrews fetish...)

The Music Man
The Wizard of Oz (for some reason, this never scared my girls)

"Sound of Music" was scary for my kids at a young age, mostly because of the Nazis.

"Mary Poppins," however, is absolutely perfect.

Nanny McPhee

I think a good movie for kids is Nanny McPhee. imdb rates it only 6,8/10 think it deserves something greater, perhaps over 7

My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service

Gentle, but not boring, even for adults.

The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends

Written by Dianne Jackson, Beatrix Potter played by Niamh Cusack. It's the sweetest, loveliest series. Look for it at the library. It's well worth finding.

Some people object to the Peter Rabbit stories: Peter gets lashed by Farmer MacGregor. Jemimah Puddleduck's eggs are eaten by dogs. The kitten nearly gets baked into a pie. I just think this is a far cry from the anxiety and surprised fear created by movies like Finding Nemo and Happy Feet, and every other animated feature out there. And I'm not criticizing those movies. My kids love that level of movie scariness.

It's worth it to find the Potter movies just to hear the credit music.

My kids ADORE Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, The Love Bug, Dr. Dolittle, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Black Beauty and for a more recent release, my very sensitive 5 year old loved Nim's Island. There is a bit of suspense but, it's tempered with humor.

I was going to suggest both of these!

Definitely My Neighbor Totoro!

Don't forget the Winnie the Pooh movies! The Tigger Movie is my favorite, and it doesn't get much gentler than Pooh.

I'm not sure if you mean "quiet" in addition to non-violent, but these are not violent:

Cheaper by the Dozen
The Parent Trap

I keep looking at several others (The Rookie, for instance), but they might be too slow-moving for a 5-year-old.

Our family absolutely loves Fly Away Home and Babe, but both have actual or threatened harm to animals.

Pooh's Heffalump Movie
The Little Bear Movie
Aristocats
Lady and the Tramp

My DS still, at five, thinks a lot of the Disney movies are "too scary," but enjoys those. (And btw, totally get My Neighbor Totoro. It rules and we love it!).

Check http://www.commonsensemedia.org/ for really great age recommendations.

Tiny note about Mary Poppins:
There's a scene where the kids run through the street and get lost, kind of ominous with a snarling dog and such. My DD was upset by that at first and we had to skip over it. Then there's the rooftop scene with fireworks and it's a bit dark, too.

I'll put in another plug for My Neighbor Totoro. DD has seen it dozens of times and it still makes her giggle.

As for Sound of Music, we've just always stopped the movie before the dark part starts. You still get all the music that way and the children are of course delightful.

We love Pooh's Heffalump Movie; it's very sweet and even brought a tear to my dh's eye, which is nearly impossible.

It's a big hit here!
