I get that too.. always the "still nursing?" even when they are tiny babies. They usually follow up with some sort of muttered praise (as if I need their approval), but I don't get why they even ask. I think some of them are trying to brace themselves for what I might do when the baby gets hungry. People are weird.

when I went to vote, there was an obnoxious 10 year old behind me in line and an old woman in front of me. DD#2 is now 15 months old and I had her confined in a mei tai. She got a little cranky after about an hour and I was winding her down with the breast. The kid behind me kept asking what she was sucking on. She would say, "is she sucking on your finger?"... "no, she's not sucking on my finger"

"She looks like she's sucking on something"...
"yeah, she's sucking on something all right"
"what is she sucking on???!!!"
Me:"Well I was trying to be discreet, but she is breastfeeding" Apparently this meant nothing to the 10 year old and she kept harping on it. Her mom was either oblivious or just didn't want to step in in any way. the older women in line in front of me were mortified that this kid was harassing me. Then the older woman said, "still nursing... how much longer do you intend to keep that up?"

I said, "as long as she wants"
she said," It'll be a little hard for her to take you to college to nurse"
I said, "yeah, I wasn't really planning on nursing her on her honeymoon either..."

This reminds me of our trip to Boston. We were on the shuttle from the airport to the car rental place. DD2 was in the sling and nursing in that semi-distracted way that 1.5yr olds do. A 3ish yr old girl was sitting across the shuttle with her family. She very loudly asks (her mom, presumably) "WHAT is that baby SUCKING on?" The mom replied: "............ her thumb! Just like you." And then *promptly* changed the subject.

Why couldn't she just have said "that baby is breastfeeding/nursing," and leave it at that? If I hadn't just been traveling with two small kids for 6hrs I would have said something (nice), but I just pulled my hoodie close around us and looked the other way.

lol, I've never had any negative comments (DS is only 2.5 months) but I did get a funny from my friend's kid:

"Are you breastfeeding him?"

"yup!"

"With your boob?"

My older daughter said my boobs belong to her little sister (3). I thought that was cute/funny/odd that she doesn't think of them as mine.

I hate how some people assume everyone thinks just like they do
