Baby handprints in . . . what?

I was given a baby handprint kit that used plaster of paris, but even when deeply asleep, my baby curled up her hand when we pressed it into the plaster. Smoothing it out and trying again didn't really work because it hardened too fast.

What about that polymer clay stuff that you bake, like Feemo or Sculpy or whatever it's called? Would that work? Or something else?

I just got a single block of sculpy to try and see if that would work. Even after softing it for a while if still takes a lot of pressure to push my son's hand down into it, and then it ends up coming out really fat looking from smooshing it into the clay so much. I've tried several times in the last couple days. Now I'm thinking of trying a salt dough.

I was just going to suggest salt dough. You can mix a softer consistency and be a bit more gentle with baby's hands.

I had more luck using my daughter's foot.

Try working in relief instead. Mix some playdough, or use plasticene or whatever else you have around, and press a blob into the lid of a coffee jar or something similar- then press her hand into the clay. THEN use this as a mould to pour the plaster of paris.

babies LOVE to curl their hands.

If you'd settle for a print instead of relief, then paint her hand, or dip it in paint, and then press it on paper. Do 4,5,6... times. They will start out fisted, but eventually one of them will be OK. Sort of messy and wastes a lot of paper, but if you really want a print.

I just had to put down a pet dying of leukemia. They used polymer clay to capture the paw prints then bake it.

Aw, sorry about your pet. When my dog died (he had leukemia too, it was so sudden) they offered to do that too, but it was my parents who took him and they didn't get his paw prints

I would suggest salt dough and feet.
