Here's a link with a good discussion of the types of backpacks and their features: Mountain Equipment Co-op

It's intended for backpacking folks but the information is still useful.

Here's a neat site with some stuff all of us could probably use. I'd really like to get the solar oven. http://www.sunvival.com/home/

There is a whistle on there too. At first I thought, huh? Then I thought that if we were in the wilderness it would be good to have a whistle because if you keep blowing it you could scare off any potential threatening wildlife.

An idea for stocking water is everytime you go shopping pick up a 24pack (usually around $4 or less) of bottled water Or 2 gallons. So you go to your weekly target shopping pickup a 24pack or 2 gallons of water. Go to costco get some water etc. It adds up fast.

I wanted to add a tip that i do with larger *supply* type foods like our water jugs (I buy them already premade and sealed) I write with a marker on the jugs/bottles/tin can the exp. date in large numbers so that at a glance I can see if stuff will be going bad or I need to rotate things out if need be expecially with things that may sit for awhile.

Does anyone know where I can get *square* water jugs? Something stackable maybe? Or even a food-grade something I can get locally and re-purpose.

I really detest hundreds of little bottles. I'd love to have 5-10 gallon, stackable potable water

hmmm I have a really big square blue water container that came with my classroom earthquake preparedness kit. Unfortunately I don't know where they ordered it from. Sorry.

Square Blue Water containers

They are called Aquatainers. They hold 7 gallons and they can be found in the camping department at Walmart (if you are so inclined to shop there). They are also available from some of the food preparedness sites.
