what are your thoughts on this homeschooling room? - Page 2

What really appeals to me is that it is a shared space - I would probably add a small TV and DVD player, with a shelf full of cool documentaries and such. With my kids the age they are, and with only my oldest "doing" school stuff right now (my middle son is invited to join but is free to say no at this point), I'd love a big open room with all of that in there ... the younger two could be engaged in the same room as us, my oldest and I could focus on some things together. There could be a CD player with headphones for the younger two to listen to stories/songs, or my oldest to use for Story of the World (he LOVES listening to SOTW!). It would allow us all to be in the same place, participating in different activities, and at the same time, able to join together to do things as well.

As it is right now, I am usually at the kitchen table with ds#1 helping him (he isn't reading yet, so often I'm there helping him read problems/directions), while my other two are doing something in another room (Lego's, Little People, etc.).

I don't mind the idea of a separate homeschool room.

I think that room is very well thought out and attractive. It looks like a good children's section of a library. A fun place for young kids to hang out.

My dream homeschool room would look a little different.
It would be nice to have a space to leave projects and books out. I would have a large table or two and some flat file storage. Maybe a drafting table.
There would be a sink in the room.
I like the rain gutter shelves but would also like a revolving book stand.
The walls might be blue, green or yellow.
No carpet on the floor.
There would a tv and dvd player.
One wall would be painted with chalkboard paint.

Fabulous room. I like everything about this room. The colors are wonderful, the organization is very well done. I like the various zones she has set up. There is plenty of space to have activities.

I like it, but it's not me. I prefer less visible storage, because I find it distracting to have everything out like that. I'm sure others find it pleasantly stimulating. And there's nowhere near enough room for books!

I don't really want a dedicated homeschool room, but I would LOVE a "project" room, near the kitchen, with nice low windows with a wide shelf for plants, easy access to the backyard, a big sink, floors that are meant to get wet, and a nice big project/game table with good lighting. Oh, and LOTS of kid accessible, hidden storage. Because this is a fantasy, the stuff is all perfectly organized, LOL!

I think that maybe I am picturing using it differently than some of the other posters. I would LIVE in there - it would be my living room. But, when I wanted to, I could close the door, invite people over, and pretend that I lived an adult life. Like one that didn't scream "welcome to my home, please don't trip over the science experiment."

It's gorgeous but I prefer something simple. The colors and keeping things in order is great though.

or the other children that visit our home would help mine do it.

Oooooooh, it's beautiful. I can only dream though, there isn't a single room in our house that big.

That is fantastic!

Our room is being painted now, this makes me even more excited!

My children would absolutely destroy it.

Personally, I'd love to live and learn there. I think it's larger than the apartment we had in Brooklyn.

I love the orange color on the walls... the play stand... and all of the book shelves. And of course, the little Ikea table and chairs.

We homeschool on the rug usually... sometimes moving to the table if there's any pencil work involved. It actually works really well for us.

DH thinks we need an entire separate child-free house nextdoor. We would only enter it when people came over.

Yeah, we need one of those too. When we have people over, it's an entire day of putting things away beforehand.

So, I had our schoolroom set up in our 2-car garage. Since we live in Florida, most of the year we can just open the garage and hang out in there. It seemed like the perfect thing.

The problem is, though, that I really need to be near the kitchen most of the day. I'm either making breakfast, fixing snacks, making lunch, or plotting dinner at any given time of the day, so it just works out better for the kids to read, work, play, whatever in our family room. So we mostly store art stuff out in the garage now, and really only use it for messy projects and not for school work.

Wow! That room is truly incredible!

Having a "homeschool" room never even crossed my mind before. A yoga/meditation room, yes! But this might be something to ponder...

That is what my dh thinks too. He does not love my giant wall map of ancient civilizations that is hanging on the dining room wall.

I think it's a nice room (although not a fan of the orange walls.. but a vibrant shade of NOT orange would be ok with me ) but it's not realistic to me. It's TOO perfect, which doesn't feel like an invitation to explore & get comfortable. It feels too 'everything has a place & everything MUST be in that place' which would make me stressed trying to run around behind kids & keep it that way! lol

wow, that is one big homeschool room. I think that is bigger than my homeschool room AND playroom (formerly a formal dining room and living room) combined and I thought I had a lot of space.

My guess is that those pics were taken right after it was set-up. When I first set-up our room it was super neat and organized but now there is artwork everywhere, crayon and marker marks all over the tables, dead ants in an ant farm, random things from the backyard in jars, etc. It looks nothing like it did at first and I LOVE it this way. My guess is her room will have a more lived-in feel once the kids get it into it.

Oh, I couldn't have carpet in a homeschool room. It would drive me crazy to keep it clean and I don't think i'd be as free with the kids art supplies and playdoh. Now, whatever is on the floor gets vacuumed up or washed off with dr. bronner's (but not very often!).

That is set up nicer than some daycare rooms I've worked in. Although the wall colour would drive me I can't stand orange.

I think it is beautiful, but....

I agree with Charmie. We are the same way. We do have a large playroom though that we love, but school work get done in the kitchen, living room, or sometimes even on the go.
