We're going to Central America in January for a family vacation (belize, guatemala) Im wondering if there are any vaccines that are wise to get when traveling to central america. Anyone have any info?

It is a Hep A and Diptheria endemic zone, but you really got weigh the positives and negatives. While we do do the DTaP, we decided against the Hep A. Other vaccines they recommend are MMR and Polio, but I think this is only because they are generic recommendations for travel. Measles isn't a huge issue in central america. Also the malaria zones are not the whole country so you would have to check on that.

again, all of this is optional.

edit: nevermind, i was wrong on the D thing. neither are problem zones.

On diptheria?

DD is only 7 months old and we are doing selective/delayed so she hasnt had any vaxes yet. I guess I should call her ped too and see what he thinks.

yeah I was wrong and belize and guatemala are not diphtheria zones. But they are Hep A zones but I don't think you can get that one until a year anyway. She couldn't get MMR yet either.

So really that leaves you with DTaP (recommended for the T and P parts as well-- but, again, if you look at the WHO site these aren't big issues in the countries you are going to) and Polio (also not an issue)
