Tips on converting extended family to simple Xmas?

My wife and I are agreed on a simpler Xmas this year, but would like to bring the message to extended family and friends that we don't want gifts, and if they want to get one for our child, that's ok, but not necessary.

We're not sure how to word and deliver such message without being presumtuous... Does anyone have any experience with this?
