Tonight at 9!

I looked ahead and it looked like the premiere is re-playing repeatedly over the next few days.

Wow, I have to go re-watch for Eugene. he really didn't stand out to me! I have to go back and see what was so great about him!

I really liked Lauren- it figures she was the first one out! I was hoping she would go far- she seemed really confident and competent.

I was hoping Patrick would go far, too. It's always nice to see less experienced people with a real gift be able to stay in and compete.

And what was up with Ariane (?why is it pronounced like Aryan, and not Arianne?) having 20 yrs experience, being from NJ, and not having any clue whatsoever what middle eastern food was comprised of?

yup, and 2 hours is PLENTY of time to cook farro. it cooks in about 45 minutes. : (farro is italian BTW, not middle eastern, though i'm sure you can find it somewhere in middle eastern cooking)

*I* could have come up with a middle eastern dish way easy in a middle eastern market... preserved lemons, dates, couscous, rice, lamb, lentils, onions, dried fruit, warm spices.....

she must have just said "i know nothing about middle eastern cooking" and then she didn't.

Yay! Got to watch it last night! It was a good episode, though I'll like it better once I get to know the contestants more. I agree with pp who don't understand Ariane's lack of range considering her experience. And when they asked her why she hadn't travelled around tasting different cuisines since she is so well-located, did she really say, out loud, "I can get that from books"??? :

I was kind of rooting for Patrick but he handled his loss with a lot of dignity and grace.

And what's-his-name that was commenting about how he is aware of his good looks and makes his sous chefs beauty check his hair for him was making me half crack up and half roll my eyes into the back of my brain. Do you think he's really that self-infatuated or just hamming it up for the cameras?

I want to make that orzo feta pasta salad.

Mostly subbing. Definitely gets more interesting when you can sort out who is who. I thought the opening quick fire was a good skills test, but seriously mean that they sent soemone home right away. Poor girl, how disappointing.

Still a bummer. She seemed like a good sport about it. I wish she could have stayed- I think I would have liked her.

Hm... I know that someone always goes home at the end of the first round, but I don't remember them sending someone home before they even got in the door before. Or even after a quick-fire challenge -- hasn't it always been after an elimination challenge?

whoops - I hadn't watched it yet - was going to tonight. I assumed you meant at the end of the episode.

Oops -- sorry -- didn't mean to ruin the surprise. Yeah, they eliminated someone much earlier than normal this round -- literally said there were 17 contestants and only 16 chef coats.

that's OK

First impression - my money's on Hosea, the guy from Boulder, CO. Just a gut feeling. I think he'll go far.

I love Top Chef.

I'm rooting for Eugene who is from our home state.

And since I say this every season I feel compelled to state that Tom Colicchio is sexy.

I had the same thought but I think he's hamming it up for the cameras. Who really has their waiters do a hair check before going out?

It seems like every season during one of the challenges where the contestants get to pick their ingredients one of them picks an ingredient they've never worked with and then ends up with a bad dish because they didn't realize how it would cook or taste. Why did that culinary school student who got booted out in the elimination challenge pick black noodles when he had never cooked with that ingredient before? It wasn't like he was forced to use that ingredient.

I will give you that! He does ok. Of course he is not in the same league as the co host Padma (or however she says her name). She is the whole reason DH watches the show. But he would tell you he loves watching the cooking. He does love cooking like I do, but I know the man for 20 plus years and I know his type too...
My dh loves Padma, too. He is a chef, though, so she's not the only reason he watches. We were both glad to see Lauren (was that her name) be the first to go. Her personality didn't do it for me-seemed over-confident and too much of a big talker. I don't remember who Eugene was, but will try to figure that out. I don't mind Stefan as much as the past "bad guys" that everyone tends to dislike.

I was watching Colicchio's face during some of the judging, especially when he didn't agree with the others. It was really funny.
