Top Chef: New York - Page 3

I wonder what the prizes are going to be this year. Last season the appliannces, grill, car etc were pretty cool. Of course I have seen enough Glad stuff to last a lifetime.

I am so happy the new season has started. Top Chef is the only show i watch on tv - aside from Project Runway. Last night I watched the first episode and the new episode. I think the European guy - from Finland??? - Stephen???- he may be this seasons villian/Lisa. Or at least get editted that way. In sharp contrast to his personality is the Italian man who seems both funny, nice, and laidback. Loving the big bearded guy who called himself a queen.

Not suprised by the first two episode eliminations. The first episode - forgot her name - but that salad is like something I'd throw together really quick with random stuff out of the fridge. In other words, nothing special. Her friend who was also eliminated, for the chinese food - just, so missed the mark. I thought they had the easiest food type to do, also, because everyone is pretty familiar with the flavors in Chinese food.

Second episode - ok, Ostrich egg woman did not seem to get *at all* that just using an Ostrich egg does not make her dish special. I mean, quiche? Maybe trend setting in 1975.. but now, not so much. I have to wonder what the ubber-sweet dessert tasted like. I happen to have a sweet tooth, so I may have liked it.

I agree that the ostrich egg chick didn't get that using something funky didn't automatically make it cool or tasty.

I like this season's chefs, they seem like a decent bunch.

Very funny to me how the lady with the super sweet dessert said that she went with something "safe".
Uh... I hate to break it to ya lady but it wasn't safe.

I was a little surprised that Jill went home- I was expecting that Ariene(?) would go home since Padma spit out the dessert. But I agree, an ostrich egg quiche isn't special. Plus, her quickfire challenge looked disgusting! I almost gagged just looking at in on the TV. At least everyone else made a hot dog- she just cut one up.

It seemed like a majority of the chefs this challenge missed the mark- there seemed to be only a few dishes that the judges liked. I enjoyed listening to all the diners complain about they can cook much better.

I think it was probably because she did two things wrong: her dish wasn't "new American" and it didn't taste good. Arianne at least had something that was "new-ish American", but it still didn't taste good. They are almost always harder on "missed the challenge / lacked innovation" than just "didn't taste good".

That said, I'm betting that Arianne is next off.

I always find that the blogs on the TC website add lots of understanding to what the judges decided and I start my Thursday by reading them.

is it going to be on next week? I forgot it was on and didn't watch it... and then when I saw you guys posting I checked my dvr and it didn't pick it up (weird)... so I found the next time this one is playing, no problem... but when I went to make sure it's set up going forward it looks like next wednesday is a real housewives marathon....

anyone know?

I've never even looked at those! I'll have to check them out now.

Whats the name of that hot guy from Europe who won the challenge this week? LOVE him!! But I am a major sucker for the dark and handsome types.....I told DH it was like watching him w a sexy accent.

I am rooting for the Indian girl who is from Chicago of course but love the Euro guys this time around. DH and I LOL and ROF when he said- "What was wrong?? I sell hundreds of these....?!!" and the judges said- no, we LIKED yours!!

When Padma spit out the oh so sweet dessert, I too thought she was history. But she will stay on a few more times, need the good drama. No idea how an ostrich egg would make a quiche taste better but.....

Yes! They are cooking Thanksgiving dinner for the Foo Fighters!!! :: (loves me some Dave Grohl)

I think Arianne would have gone home had Jill not rambled like a drunkard about how she'd do better if she was able to stay. Her explanation was complete gibberish.

Fabio...yummy. He could slide right onto that carpaccio plate for me! Yummy. Those olives were neat, too. Stefan is a bit too "I'm so great" for my liking. It was great to see Donatella put him in his place during Quickfire.

I REALLY wanted Carla's dessert-it looked yummy!

Do chefs have to "try out" for the show? Try out like they have to cook something for the producers/judges? I thought they just submit a resume and a video of themselves.

That was funny and predictable too.

Arianne is annoying. "If I go down you guys will hear it from me". What was that about? You're responsible for your own cooking lady. If the desert is too sweet that's your problem not anyone else's problem. Her attitude rubs me the wrong way. Plus she doesn't come across like someone who has been in the food industry for two decades. She doesn't know how to make a desert. You gotta know how to make a desert, appetizer, soup, and entree if you want to be Top Chef.

I like Radhika, Eugene, Carla, and Fabio.

I didn't get that part either. I would not be honest with my competitor and tell them that they need to change their dish. Everyone for themself.

Plus, you really need to have the confidence in yourself to make it on this show. You can't go around asking everyone to taste your dessert.

And she knew it was too sweet

I Loooooooove Top Chef!!! :

I agree, I completely cracked up when Fabio was so defensive because he thought they didn't like his dish!

I feel like Ariane has GOT to be next (and I think she knows it too). I don't even feel that she adds any fun like Betty did a few years ago.

It was obvious that the rejected people were going to be ultr-critical, but I really, really liked it when they'd say something favorable. It was refresshing.

Counting the minutes to next wednesday!

I love this show! I can't believe I only recently found out about it. Food and reality TV, 2 of my favorite things!

I can't believe Ariane isn't off. She has been consistently clueless. She makes a disgustingly sweet, cookie crumble, "cherry surprise" dessert at her restaurant and that's what she does for the challenge?

The 'spherical olives' were neat- I want to look that up and see how he did that!

I have not heard of the blog- I will have to go check it out!

You were right about the blogs. They definitely give some clarity to what happened!

I'm having a booger of a time looking up recipes though. I thought I would be able to go to a certain episode and find a recipe, but if it's there, I can't find it. Help?

I don't know that you can view by episode, but some of the recipes are here: http://recipes.mt.bravotv.com/

I agree- I just read Tom's and their decision makes a lot more sense now. And it was helpful that he explained New American cuisine, as I had no idea what exactly that entailed. I'll be sure to check that out every week now!

I wouldn't be surprised if Ariane was sent home next week.

I love this show! I like Tom Colicchio too, but for some reason it's kind of a turn-off at the end of EVERY show, when he says "that being said, someone has to go home" and he turns his head to look at Padma for her to announce. He looks so weird when he's turning his head like that! All the neck skin wrinkles and his eyes kind of bulge out!

I also thought it was lame when Ariane said "I knew it was too sweet, and I thought about doing it over, but...that's what I made" WTF? That just sounds like pure laziness to me.

And I loved it when Jill stumbled over her words for what she would do better to stay on the show. And then when they showed her in the stew room, she was like, "yeah, I kind of messed up" and brushed it off. I would have been soooooo embarrassed! I probably would have broken down crying!

I thought it was so cute too when Fabio thought they were going to criticize his dish!

So yeah, nothing new to add...but I love this show!
