PICS: Baby Acne or Allergy? - Page 2

Oh my i'm so glad that there are picts on here....this is what my DS face looks like too and he's 8 weeks this week and this skin issue has been going on since he was 3 weeks. Oh my poor babe...his skin is so so dry..i've tried everything..i finally changed detergants to All Free and Clear..we cloth diaper too. I've cut out dairy but have had a few fall backs...i know i should have more self control. How long does it take for there skin to return to soft baby skin once stopping dairy? I've ate eggs now that i dont have milk for cereal...wonder if i should stop eggs too. What do i eat then? I'm tandem nursing too. Is soy Lecithin ok to take as a supplement when nursing a babe with skin issues? I started taking it because i got mastitis in each breast with in a week of each other...so i had mastitis 2 times in one week...different breasts.
I also use coconut oil on babies skin and it seems to be the best moisturizer..but still his skin is so dry and flaky.
Sorry to be all over the place...but it seems like everything is so tightly related.

Wow. I have been trying to avoid cutting dairy out as ds skin gets better then gets worse. It is his diaper area mainly now (but he rarely has diapers on lately as we do EC) not so much his face. I had some milk chocolate last night and his face was all blotchy this morning

Can we do a dairy eliminations mini support group ladies?? I really feel I need the support.

I'll start No cheese on my spagetti tonight.

I know at first it seems so hard to go dairy-free, but now I feel like it is a total cake walk compared to some of these other mamas. I have found that now that I have been off dairy for so long the substitutes that I used to think were ok are now good. Like chocolate rice milk is yummy, I love nutritional yeast on just about everything. Try some nutritional yeast flakes on your spaghetti. It's very good.

I know that egg is responsible for a lot of skin issues...dairy seems to affect babes GI more often. That is my deduction after almost two years of breastfeeding on an ED (no eggs, dairy, nuts, seeds in our case) and reading a ton of breastfeeding an allergic babe threads and forums (POFAK has a subforum for this).

Good question on here...how long DOES it take for the skin to look better after cutting out the allergen?

Mrsboyko - your DD's skin in your pic looks like my DD's skin...how long did it take for her skin to clear up after eliminating the dairy, etc.?

Thank you so much ladies. I have so much to learn in this area. I am experienced at no dairy as I had no dairy for many years. I live in an area where alteratives aren't available so right now I don't have much. I too am interested in how long to cut out for before noting a change. In general I avoid soy already but will eat it as an ingredient in things. I can do no eggs but shouldn't I do one food at a time?

Unfortunately, I was a slow learner and I didn't go dairy free till she was 5 months old (this was in my pre-MDC days). Her skin was bad from about 3 weeks till 13 weeks. It cleared mostly w/o conscious diet change, but she still had bad cradle cap and cracked skin behind her ears till I stopped the dairy. I took the long road in eliminating it. First just milk and ice cream. Then cheese, then a week or so later butter and other little stuff. Every time I took something out, I saw an improvement.

Usually if you completely remove the offending foods at once, you should see an improvement in about 2-3 days, more after a week, and nearly normal after 2 weeks. Eczema takes the longest to clear while any intestinal upset is usually first. The "acne" is somewhere in between.

Hope that helps.

In the elimination phase, it is best to get rid of as much as you think is possible at once. Adding them back in should be done one at a time. Just about every store carries rice milk now. Give it a try on cereal or in your coffee, something to dilute the taste at first. It is actually pretty sweet. Also, I still eat eggs in baked goods (breads, cakes). We had DD tested at a year old and she is allergic to the yokes, not the whites, so i usually cook with just the whites if I can. This is backwards to the norm though, most allergic kids are fine with the yokes and allergic to the whites so you never know.

How long did it take for your babies' faces to clear up after eliminating the trigger?

I think her skin is looking better already. Here are the things I've done:

- changed bedding (to bedding I know was washed with All free, although I think the lasts ones were too)
- eliminated dairy from my diet, only a few days in so far
- cleansed face and put breast milk on her face

Not sure which thing is helping...but its looking better but still very much there.
