What's your 8-9 mo old eating?

How often does your dc BF? Ds is 8 months old and is BF about 6 times in a 24 hour period. He eats pureed sweet potato and pear maybe once or twice a day. I need to intro more foods and feel like he's not getting enough. I know many other non allergic babies are eating table food by now. I wouldn't care, but ds weight has dropped significantly. He was 7.15 at birth; 12.1 at 2 mo's; 14.8 at 4 mo's and now at 8 months old he's only 16.8 lbs. He went from consistently being at 50% through 4 months to now he's between 5-10%. He also was an excellent sleeper up until 4 mo's old. Now he wakes several times at night to nurse, but will only nurse about 5 minutes.

I worry about him getting enough. I know many babes can EBF until 12 mo's and get enough that way, but my boys aren't those babes. (I had weight gain probs with ds#1 and he was way below the charts for months). DS#2 (my 8 mo old) seems to be doing a bit better, but has slowed down on his weight gain. In fact, from 4 mo's to 5 1/2 mo's he only gained like 6 oz. So, he's done better in the last few weeks with weight gain, but still seems like he's hungry.

On one side I feel like I should speed up with the solids but on the other I'm gunshy b/c I don't want to have the allergy issues that ds#1 had. DS#2 has eczema and has reacted through BM to soy, dairy, banana, wheat. So I'm on a top 8 elim diet. I had major OALD and OS for a while (still have OALD) and the OS can flare up at any time if he gets off schedule. So I have to be careful of that with my supply too.

Any suggestions? Sorry for the long post, just not sure what to do at this point!

*Oh, one important factor to add in is that ds started crawling one week before his 6 month b-day and is now cruising. He's very active so I know that affects his weight gain, but I just know he's hungry and needs more calories. It's not really recommended to add in fats for an FA babe at this point, right? TIA!

I would trial a fat like olive oil or coconut oil and see if he can tolerate it. If so, add it to whatever food you're feeding him. Substituting solids for breastmilk probably won't help with weight gain, though. Fruits and vegs are high density, but not high calorie, so they'll fill his tummy but not cause him to gain weight (that's why they're great for dieters). I completely understand your fear about starting solids, though. My ds is 6.5 mths and he hasn't eaten a tablespoon of solids combined! I'm going to start on sweet potato today, though (just roasted some this morning).

Do you block feed to keep your oversupply in check? Does your baby stay at the breast as long as he wants? With frequent waking and weight loss, I would suspect there is more going on than being hungry. I would suspect another food allergy you haven't yet identified.
