Soapmaking gifts?

I am making my holiday list and something I really want are the supplies to begin soapmaking. Is there any where that my MIL or someone can go online to get a simple beginning kit, with everything you need to get started (the mold, lye, etc)?

Barring that, what are the bare minimum essentials to get started (down to timer) and where can they be found online? No one who will by getting me a gift knows anything about soapmaking so it would have to be spelled out for them, or an easy all-in-one set.

Thanks!

I have been searching and all I can find are melt-and-pour and glycerin sets.

I want to make cold-process soap, and there doesn't seem to be any way to make that easy to add to a gift list.

Okay, I found a couple, everything but the lye which is fine. I guess it would help if I knew exactly what I needed. But an official "nevermind!" from me on this one. Thanks.

www.millersoap.com

this is great site for beginners...should contain all the info you need on what supplies you need as well as soapmaking instructions.

http://brambleberry.com/kits.html scroll down to cold process kit. That looks fancier than my soap, more ingredients and fancy molds. Comes with a book. The lye and olive oil aren't included, lye you need a special waiver to buy, olive oil comes cheap at the grocery.

you can get lye here www.thesoapdish.com no waiver needed.

On the Brambleberry site, I am only seeing M&P kits.

Oh, nope - there it is! Perfect. I will also check out the other sites shared. Thanks!!

Someone said I can get lye at the store, is that true? I've never seen it, but then again, I've never gone looking for lye before.

you can try lowe's or home depot...they will sometimes have a brand called "roebic" in the drain cleaner section.

It's at the hardware store, in the drain cleaning section. You'll have to read the ingredients to see if it's really 100% lye, but there are often several options and it's pretty cheap. I pay $2.49 for 16 ounces of crystals at Menards.
