FO - dressup chainmail hood!

I made this for my son for Christmas, as part of a knights dressup outfit. He loves to dressup, but everything is stuff his older sisters have out grown, and i wanted to make him something of his own!

Ye s- he tried it - he wont remember about it come tomorrow - so he'll still be surprised in 6 weeks! But mostly - i wanted to make sure it fit, as i changed the pattern a bit to fit his much smaller head (he's only 2, the free pattern as written would fit like a 10 yr old)

the hood:

Him trying it on (and pooh bear too!):

That's too cool! I almost didn't open it because I was thinking for sure it would be a knitted pattern. How wonderful to find out it's crocheted. Can you give a rundown of the changes you made? Did you just use a different hook size, or what? ETA: If you haven't yet, you should send an e-mail to the designer with links to your pix; I'm sure she'd love to see it.

That is awesome. My 5 year old has a big head so I'm sure the pattern will work for him. I tried finding a pattern for this exact thing a couple of months ago but I was unhappy with all of them. I was also looking for some type of silvery yarn but I went to every store in town (and all the way up the coast on vacation) and couldn't find any. Maybe at Christmas.

Oh - i should email the pictures!! Good idea! It is posted on my raverly projects page (if you dont already belong to Rav - JOIN!)

what i did different was instead of crocheting all the way to 99 sts around (the top part - its crocheted top down) - i only went to 77 stitches... which while it makes it off for when you mail the "mail" portion (which is in multiplies of 3) you cant really tell that 1 stitch is "off".

I also left out 2 rows of the mail in the chain 5, but added in a row of chain 3

i also used a H hook, instead of an I hook

i didn't make the neck piece 2 inches wide - i just did it till i though it looked right for his size of head (2 inches on a toddler would have looked HUGE at the neck).

If this doesnt make sense - feel free to PM me - its after 1am but my ds woke up crying and is now asleep on the couch, so i'm still up playing online. lol

yes - i LOVE that its crochet - which if you think about how chainmail is "linked" - crochet makes much more sense. There was another hood i saw that had a should piece that wont down over the shoulders also and laced in the upper chest - but i didnt like it as much.

I think the yarn i used (Caron Simply Soft, heather grey) is perfect for the look i wanted!

When I read this thread last week I knew right away I had to make this for my 7yo ds--I love it! I saw yours on ravelry too, when I was looking for tips on making it smaller. I started it as written using the I hook and it's quite large--too big even for me. So I'm going to rip back or maybe even start over using an H hook. It works up quickly, so I'm not too upset about that.

I wish I could try it on my son's head as I go, but it's a present for Christmas. He's seen me working on it--he believes it is a very large coaster.

And I totally agree, the yarn she suggested in the pattern, the Caron Simply Soft Heather Grey, has a great sheen and drape and is ideal for the look of the chainmail!

Thanks so much for posting your FO, because I never would have known this existed otherwise!!!

If it hadnt been for the homemade toy swap - i never would have know about this pattern either! Someone was ISOing for someone to make it And i had been drooling over the one in Nova Natural but now i can make this instead!

Size - with teh H hook and going up to the 99 sts round - it could easily fit my soon-to-be 10 yr olds head!
