DPN: How to Start?

I've finally just figured out circular needles and now I have a project that I need to do on double pointed needles.

When I cast on do I put all the stitches on one needle then knit them off onto each of the other needles (four in all)? Or do I cast on eight stitches on each of the four needles and then somehow connect them?

I cast on one needle and them slip them to each individual needle.

Have you seen silver's sock class? It will help you get started with DPN (casting on, joining the round, etc) even if you don't want to make a sock.
