Contemplating Gluten

Well, we've been off of wheat for 13 months and gluten for 12 months. We did a trial (through breastmilk) in May starting with spelt and expanding to gluten wide, which ended in bloody poop and interrupted sleep and general fussiness after about a month's time (though it was the same time we definitively lost corn, so who know's what's what...).

Since then we've reintroduced oat on a 4 day minimum rotation with no trouble. Now the crystal is starting to tell us that spelt, barley and wheat are safe for us. I had been planning on a trial (if crystal approved) over the holidays but now I'm not so sure.

My stool tests came back with significant gut dysbiosis (no yeast) and mild inflammation (even through 17 months of probiotics). Plus my blood work has me low in alot of nutrients. DD is 15.5 months old, not old enough for gluten IMO. So if my gut is still leaking then she could suffer. But there's alot of foods that she can tolerate through BM now, which she can't have directly, so maybe I am healing.

Positive thinking: I AM HEALING.

DD carries one Celiac gene, we still don't know my status. I want to optimize our healing. We're starting to get foods back, and dd hasn't had any skin reactions (except from a new allergen, grapes) since the beginning of September. DD's growth has majorly slowed though and she's tumbling down the charts.

I'm afraid of setting us back by trialing gluten and having it fail. On the other hand, I want to trial it to know the answer, and also to have a full Celiac panel done on me. For now I'm erring on the side of caution (though I know we're being mildly glutened when eating out- like soy sauce in Thai food occasionally- and not visibly reacting).

What would you do? I'm leaning toward abstaining from intentional gluten until my gut is in good shape (as indicated by stool/blood tests), and until dd is at least two.

I think your gut (ha!) is right. I would do this exactly.

Yeah, it sucks to have to wait so long but I think this is our current new plan too and it sounds like a wise plan for you guys.

I can totally see why you are longing to get conclusive answers on the gluten, but even so I'd stay away from them when as you say, your LO isn't growing well still! In case you (both) have real gluten intolerance even if you might not experience symptoms right away, damage IS being done by even a little intake. Look at it this way: another year gluten free is not bad for your health, but a gluten trial at this point might very well be. Just hang in there!!! : (and please tell me the same thing in six months or so...)

Lisa, after my research today, I would suggest... no, strongly advise! I would advise you to stay away from any gluten products, including oats not specifically labelled GF (except they are thinking the protein from oats, avidin, may be harmful in large quantities). It's obvious to me you have Celiac Disease, and through you, your DD. I believe all celiacs were from the same tribe/family at one time, and I'm just looking out for you, sister.

You told me you had some other symptoms in your past. Go to SB07 and check out the videos I posted.

Celiac disease isn't just about your gut, it affects much more than that. It's a system-wide genetic disease, and it can cause cancer, diabetes, chronic fatigue, seizures, moodiness and depression, and so much more.

They say gluten intolerance and Celiac Disease are not the same thing. I beg to differ, I think we all just manifest the symptoms in different ways dependant upon on genetic code.

Thanks everyone... I've decided to delay any possible trials until after the child is at least two. Who knows, maybe we'll have some other answers by then. I'm starting to feel good, and DD is doing really well (the pedi said she even grew this month). So I don't want to screw things up by getting in a hurry...
