Deli Meat w/ Milk Coating - a question ???

So I know most deli meat has a milk coating on it. Does freshly sliced deli meat from the grocery store, where they slice it in front of you, also contain a milk coating? Is it something put on the packaged deli meat after slicing? Or do they inject it into the meat before sliced - in which case it could be possible that the sliced in front of you kind also has the milk coating.

I hope that makes sense. I hope someone knows the answer.

Thanks!

From what I understand, cured meats like salami usually have a milk coating. BUT, a lot of normal deli meats potentially contain dairy products, too. Most use a lactic acid starter culture and in some cases that means corn, but in other cases, the growth medium is dairy. Basically, you have to call the companies and find out. The only safe ones I know of are the low-sodium turkey and low-sodium roast beef from Boarshead. They're also gluten and corn free.

So you're saying that yes, freshly sliced deli meat can indeed have milk?

Bummer! I'm not doing so hot on my first 2 days of eliminating dairy then!

I looked at the Boars Head, and I thought every single one had dextrose in it, which is corn.

The Thumann's roast beef and turkey are safe for my kids (no dairy, no soy, no corn, no gluten, no msg, no who knows what else). I have not found a ham, bologna, or pepperoni that is safe yet.

Most deli meats have dairy. There are few that do not. Applegate Farms is safe and a few others. Our PCC (HFS) carries a brand that is safe but I forget the name. Dairy is a sneaky one!

Anything that is kosher would not have dairy in it.

The pre packaged turkey meat Hormel Natural is dairy free. It actually says one of their ingredients (forget the name) is not from a dairy source. So we buy that one...I was just wondering about the non-pre packaged deli meats at grocery stores where they slice it in front of you. If those have dairy in them, how do they get the dairy in it? (not that it really matters)

Just the low sodium versions of turkey and roast beef. I got that info from the corn-avoiders board a while back, but I called them my self in the last few months.

Like I said, it can be part of the lactic acid starter culture which is used as a preservative. I think you're right about Hormel, though.

You're just avoiding dairy?

Avoiding dairy and eggs, which are my toddler son's allergies and I think my 6wk DD has allergies through my breastmilk. Her face looks horrible and looks like other babie's with an allergy rash at that age on their face.
