Who loved and who hated Angela's Ashes? - Page 2

I liked it, mostly for the dark humor. I wanted to crack Angela over the head (or should I say a belt in the gob?) sometimes though, even though it's obvious she was powerless to change her fate. I had to keep reminding myself of that.

I didn't like T'is as much, and I haven't read Teacher Man yet.

I loved it. Dark humor, yes, and somewhat depressing. But in other ways, uplifting and heartwarming.

I am second generation American with Irish immigrant grandparents. Grandpa was an alcoholic and Grandma was depressed and struggled her whole life. It gave me a lot of insight to my family's issues.

Well, try as I might, I gave up on it. It was just too sad to read about all that neglect of little kids...I've become terribly sensitive to suffering children since my daughter was born...

Oh I hear ya! I am actually glad that I read it before becoming a mom because I enjoyed it. I wasn't at the ultra sensetive place that I am now about children, not just mine but ALL children.
Thanks for the update.

I loved it, but I was in Limerick at the time I read it, so it was a different experience. (Almost got hit by a bus because I realized I was standing in the street where they lived and got lost in thought... smart me). Now that I'm a mom.... I think it would be a little harder to read. I am much more sensitive.
Tis was only so-so.

Very depressing, for sure, but I like history and it was interesting (and pretty horrifying) to read about what life was like then.

I read it first before kids and did ok with it. But re-read it again after having kids and could barely do it, it was so tough to imagine little kids having a life like that, both at home and in school.

What a surreal experience that must have been! Wow!

I loved it. I had read it many times. It is very depressing but is so interesting and well written.
