Can't wait to see the finished deal. I have been wanting to get in on a KAL, but I may just knit one all by myself.
So far it really hasn't taken me that long. It knits pretty fast. I think I averaged almost a block/nap time..... Only a mom could say that. seaming on the other hand sucked.

Great job! I haven't even started yet.

Oh wow! That is SOOooo super cute! :

You've inspired me to consider making one for my DS. Right now playing farm is one of his favorite activities.

I ended up doing some research and looking at pictures and deciding to make a rug. I got a 3ft x 6ft hook rug canvas (I have two kids who will share it) and am just going to attach the pieces. I figure if I use the rug then I can make a more structured piece and use many different kinds of yarn art (knit, crochet, felting, and latch hook) so it will have more textures. It really seems like a fool proof project. I've started with the yellow brick road and am just going to fill it in. Now I just need to find patterns for knitted buildings, fences, and that sort of thing. What a great project! What would I ever do without mdc???

The Knitted Farmyard is a book that has building "plans" in it. As for fences, I hope to make some out of branches or I saw some knit ones in the new issue of "Living Crafts." The mag has new farm squares in the winter issue. I didn't read the knit pattern but was thinking I could make a couple icords and weave/braid them together.

Have fun. Can't wait to see you finished product.

I had ordered some back copies and they didn't come and didn't come. When I called they said there had been problems with them receiving orders via internet and sent my order out the next day.
of course, it came the very next day!

I love your mat, and I feel the same way about seaming. I'm a knit in the round kinda gal and will do anything to avoid seaming.

I don't have the back issue but have been yearning to make one.....actually, I've been slowly buying yarn to make one. Did you stockinette stitch the "fields" or garter stitch them? Did you use one or two strands of yarn to make the fields and roads?

Please continue to post pic's as you embellish. It's nice to see craft materials being used rather than um, collected as I usually do.

I'm working on mine right now and am trying to think of all the quick/easy texures/looks that I can do. I'm going to attach my squares/shapes to a rug canvas so I'm pretty free to do whatever. Any ideas? So far it's single crochet, stockinette, seed and garter. I ws thinking about ribbing but I'm not sure that would work well n the attachment phase. I saw someone knit a square that looked sort of like waves but I'm not familiar with that stitch. Thanks!

Oooohh...your mat is so cool! I love the strips between the squares. I was so ready to be finished with mine I just whipstitched the squares together. Maybe I'll rip that out and put those nice paths between. (next year, when all holiday projects are done)
Thanks for sharing!

Wow, that is gorgeous! I think that you may have inspired to knit one of these for my kiddos

The new issue of LC is out and they have some new squares featured. The MEADOW SQUARE looked easy and interesting to me.
Calle Double Moss Stitch pattern, Size 7 needles, CO 54 stitches.
Two strands of yarn (they used two different greens)
Row 1 - k2, p2, repeat to end
Rox 2 - p2, k2, repeat to end
Row 3 - p2,k2, repeat to end
Row 4 - k2, p2, repeat to end
Continue until piece is square.
They also made a fence around it.

My farmyard to coming together.
I have knit paths and connected the first row of four squares and now working on the the last path in my second row. this took some figuring on my part because I am making the path to be water so it "flows" from the pond to the edge of the mat. I am knitting right into the existing squares so I didn't have to sew the paths to the squares. It's by no means perfect but I love doing it and can't wait to see my own finished project. :

Good luck to everyone.

Kim- that is such a good idea to do the roads on the blocks.... Wish I would have thought that far ahead.... Still haven't picked mine up. But yet again my excuse is winter knitting for my little ones.... mittens are now done- but slippers are the next thing...

Mine is taking FOREVER to get finished! I have two little one so I decided to get a large canvas but I don't think I'll ever have it filled. Plus, I'd like to make some buildings and animals to go on it. I only have 19 days left!!! Anyone have any ideas for making the buildings sturdy?

The Knitted Farmyard book has patterns for buildings and if I remember correctly they are "filled" with a foam block to make them sturdy.

I am anti-foam. Any ideas for making them sturdy that are more friendly to a baby? I thought about wood pieces inside but I'm certain that would just get lopped at my head!
Thanks!!!

Sorry

Why not just stuff it tightly with roving then? Like you would a knitted animal?
Filling it with roving is a great idea! I also saw somewhere that you can felt around anything, even a box. I was thinking of trying to felt around a square plastic container and cutting a door.

So, can anyone else post some pictures. Of the buildings and fences, maybe? Are the fences detatched from the mat? Freestanding?

Are these basically blankets with certain areas to play on? I'm thinking that you wouldn't need to do seams on every block, just the horizontal ones. You could make long vertical strips then bind those together. That's how I do my "patchwork" knit blankets.

:bump I'd love to see more!
