dp's waist measures 42inches, his body is like the guy in the picture, he eats TF the majority of the time - even low carb most of the time but he is still a typical apple shape, according to this article it is something to really worry about. i do wish he could loose weight - he dosn't often eat any junk food only very occasionally and he dosn't really over eat - he sometimes has a hearty appetite at dinner but that is usually because he has been running around and not eating at work. he dosn't have time to do proper exercise at the moment but he used to swim and even when he did he was still this shape. he just dosn't seem to loose weight. i know that as a child he ate typical SED (SAD for english people!) with a few home cooked meals throughout the week.
i don't know what to do to help him with his weight - he says that it is because of all the red meat, butter, raw cream he is eating - he jokingly says i'm trying to bump him off with it!! but he loves eating rich food!! but he does have heart conditions in his family - his father has a heart problem and his grandad died of heart attack.

the full article that was published in the paper said that for a woman a 25inch waist would mean that there would be no change to life expectancy!! but who has a 25inch waist??

His waist is 42 inches? In the article they said that anything over 47 inches for men was a health risk. It sounds like your DH has nothing to worry about, even if he is "apple shaped" I guess he's a small enough apple.

How is his elimination time (is he regular) or does he get constipated? I always suspect that a large abdominal region has mucoid plaque in it, especially if the person is having elimination problems and I would suggest doing a colon cleanse. This article explains mucoid plaque well: http://www.thedoctorwithin.com/colon...Your-Colon.php

How many carbs does he eat? I have finally been able to shrink my belly by cutting out sweeteners (even natural ones like honey and maple syrup), starchy veggies and grains.

Eating too few meals a day will WRECK your metabolism, especially for men. Men should be eating 5-6 times per day-- three good solid meals and three snacks. [ETA: the biggest meal of the day should be midday, not at the end of the day!] This is probably his number one problem. You can't skip eating and then load up on food all at once because realistically your body can only digest so much at once, so even though he's putting it away, so to speak, at dinner, it might as well be junk food because any amount past his digestive systems capacity isn't getting digested enough to be nutritious. It's just a waste. It would literally be better for him to eat a more SAD if he was eating more frequently per day.

Even if he wasn't eating so infrequently per day, I was goign to mention digestion. Besides eating too few meals, some people just have more sluggish digestion than others. Getting him on a good quality probiotic supplement will go a long way towards helping him with his waistline.

And I do, by the way, agree with the premise of the article-- waist size is a key way to gauge a person's health.

And I have no idea what woman would have a 25 inch waist! I am 5'1' and small-boned, and at my smallest size, (104 pounds), with my flattest tummy, I still had a 27 inch waist.

I used to have a 25" waist. I'm 5'9 & around 123 lbs right now. Back then I was about 120 lbs. No idea what it is now, after 3 kids.

I also agree with the premise of the article. I've been reading a lot about heart disease since my Dad was recently dxd with it & I remember reading that it was a smaller waist size that was a cause for concern - 42", if I remember correctly.

thanks for all your replies. i'm going to get dp to read them all! liontigerbear - i'm so sure that this is why he can't loose the weight, he is starving his body throughout the day. - the crazy thing is that he run's two top restaurants!! they are both pretty TF friendly in many ways as one is traditional english and one french. i think he needs a breakfast before he leaves for work but he leaves so early that he just gets up and goes and has a 1hr commute with no chance of buying anything tf friendly on the way. i found another article that said that it is about the hip to waist ratio - so i'm going to measure his hips and waist again and calculate accordingly. i'm sure he is at risk though because he has alot of fat around the middle - spilling over his jeans. i'm worried and i wish he would feel the same, he just thinks i'm 'neurotic' and that i shouldn't be so health obsessed. it is so difficult to get it through to him that although he's not ill now the day might come when he is going to start getting ill. but he would rather face that when it comes :
he is a trained chef and makes lots of our food - i just wish he'd make himself some breakfast!

I tell my DH I'm worried about his health, because I enjoy his company and don't want to make it through this high stress part of our lives to lose him just when things start getting good!! It hasn't gotten through to him yet, but I'm so glad you asked the question. My DHhas the same problem!!

Ok, here's the deal with fat making you fat, as I have learned.
Your body has one and only one way of storing energy. The only way you can ever store any fat at all is if your body is releasing insulin. Once the insulin is released anything is game. If you have a lot of extra carbs and fat in your system your body will start storing it all like crazy. So, if you eat lots of fat you need to reduce the amount of carbs you're eating. The only way your body will ever release insulin is if you are eating carbohydrates and the more you eat the more it releases. If you would like him to lose weight cut back the carbs (cutting down on grains is best, keep the fruits and veggies high) until he's lost the weight you think he needs to lose then bump them back up until he's satisfied but not gaining weight.
