Asthma and Vaccines

I've been thinking a lot about getting dd2 a few vaccines .We had to take her to the ER the other day, and the Dr suggested the MMR, Pertussis, and DTaP. I was also thinking of getting her the Polio one.
I didn't want to do any at all, but I've been thinking about these for several months now. My head is spinning and I'm really confused as to what do to.
I know these won't keep her from having asthma attacks, and there is no guarantee that she will be immune.....I guess my concern and her Peds is all of the problems she has had with being in and out of the hospital since May.
I don't even know what I'm asking, can anyone help me?

DTap is Diptheria, Tetanus and Pertussis. There is no seperate Pertussis vax.

I think you need to look at the reasons why you want to vax. As you said yourself, none of them are going to help your daughter's asthma any. If she does contract a VPD, the asthma might make the illness harder to deal with - but then again, asthma may put her at higher risk of having an adverse reaction to the shots.

Trying to make this decision can be really overwhelming. Take one vaccine at a time, research the disease, the vaccine, and potential reactions.

If you are most concerned about helping your daughter stay healthy, it may be best to research ways to boost the immune system, whether or not you decide to vax.

oops - double entendre

I too am curious about this. DD was diagnosed with asthma this past April and really only seems to have problems when she gets a cold. Since she's been diagnosed, I've only had to give her maybe 3-4 breathing treatments so it's not bad by any means but with a whooping cough outbreak here I'm a little concerned. I guess too it's off to do more research.

Infections with fevers are beneficial to children and some of them especially to kids who suffer from asthma. One is measles.

Here are a few links -

One thing is for sure: No vaccine has ever been tested in a child with asthma. None! So no doctor can tell you whether the child would be better off with or without vaccines. They try to tell you, but they are only bluffing.

imo, there is no way an immune system can function better after being artificially manipulated. The body has to immediately set out to restore it to it's former condition because that is what nature does.

I would not vaccinate a child with asthma. The outcome could be very detrimental and irreversible.

Kenneth Bock's book, Healing the New Childhood Epidemics, Autism, ADHD, Asthma and Allergies was an interesting book to me. It discusses all these as different manifestations of toxins and gut issues. If he's right, vaccination of an asthmatic child has more potential risks than for the typical kid out there. I like the book because it speaks to our situation, where my two kids are expressing their high toxic load in quite different ways; neither is asthmatic, so no personal experience with that.

Thanks so much for responding so quickly. DD1 is vax'd through her first 2 years. She has been hospitalized twice for asthma and DD2 has been hospitalized at least 4-5 times now since May of this year. She was EBF and is still nursing, but has low iron. I am going to look at all of the links and see if I can find that book.
I feel silly for not even realizing that them having asthma puts them at a greater risk with the vaccines. I just knew that this time around I wanted to wait until she was at least two before I started any if at all.

One other thing... take a look at this stickied thread..

http://mothering.com/discussions/sho...d.php?t=406983

IIRC, it mentions selenium deficiency in mom correlating to asthma in kids. I think the thread is a great read just for basic nutrition and gut health stuff, but I _think_ it may have discussed asthma specifically.

OMG...I am sitting here speechless. WOW. I really feel that dd1's speech problems have come from having her vax'd and her elevated lead levels. I am definitely looking more into ways to boost their immune system and overall health.

Thanks for all of the articles!

There was some research into the effects of the smallpox vaccine on the risk of asthma. The risk actually went down although that was probably a statistical fluke.

Wow. Okay. Never would have thought to put that connection together. We're looking at ds being diagnosed with asthma soon (he's on an inhaler right now). He's had breathing issues all his life but we never could pinpoint it. Lots of "upper respiratory infections", random coughing/wheezing episodes, croup, etc. In fact, he had croup right after a set of vaccinations at 2 months. Again at 4 months (right after vaccinations). That time I didn't believe it was croup though. He didn't have the barking cough but he definately had wheezing and coughing. I'm going to have to look back and see if any other respiratory things coincide with vaccines.
