I will be library shopping this weekend, and am looking for books my 1st grader can read (mostly) alone. This dc isn't into Dr. Suess-type books.

Please share!

TIA!

It depends on the level he's reading. As far as boxed set readers (like the scholastic sets) I totally recommend Pup and Pop. The stories are cute and read pretty smoothly. The pictures provide lots of context and both of my boys enjoyed them when they were getting started reading. They aren't real choppy like a lot of beginning readers can be.

Beyond that level, I totally recommend Dav Pilky's Ricky Riccotta series. My oldest enjoyed Henry and Mudge and Nate The Great as well. Have fun shopping!

Of course it completely depends on the level, but DD likes Frog and Toad and Little Bear.

Our library didn't have the Pup and Pop series, so I went to Barnes and Noble to check them out. He is beyond them. Yay!

I did check out the first two Ricky Ricotta books! I was a little leary, when I learned the author also wrote the Captain Underpants series, but there was avery helpful mom at the library, who assured me that this Ricotta series is more...wholesome. My ds is excited to read them, though isn't quite sure about the length of the books. I'll help him, though!

Thankyou!

We have all of the Little Bear books-I just totally forgot about them! Thanks for thre reminder! I picked up some Frog and Toad, too.

I spent twohrs in the library, just looking through all the early readers! There is so much crap out there! I feelbad for the dc,whose parents just get whatever.

Anyway, thanks! I came home with two bags full of books, and he is definitely curious about them!:

I also love A. Lobel's (of F & T) other books, like Grasshopper on the Road, Uncle Elephant, Mouse Tales, Mouse Soup, and Owl at Home. (The grasshopper and mouse books are my absolute favorites.)

DD also loved the Fox books by James Marshall. These were hilarious. I didn't like the ones written by his son (?) Edward as much, however.

Frog & Toad are about a DRA level 18-24 I think, so those are good books for a pretty good 1st grade reader -- our K students are supposed to end K at a level 6 and end 1st at a level 18 -- the highest reading group in my DDs 1st grade class is currently reading (in November) DRA level 20 - 24 books (which I think is about right for my DD, but too low for a few of the other kids in the group who are more fluent readers). Other good books at the 18-20 level include Henry & Mudge books and Young Cam Jansen books.

I really like the Scholastic Book Wizard....it lets you look up the DRA or grade level of books and also has a tool that lets you find other books of a similar level. I use it a lot before I go to the library...

If Frog and Toad is about his level, he might also like:

Henry and Mudge
Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa
I second James Marshall's Fox books -- very clever!
The Stupids. Some people are offended by the word "stupid," but these books are hilarious and the Stupids are really a very happy family that always has a good time.
Nate the Great
Little Critter
Bruce Coville's Sarah's Unicorn is the single best early-reader book we found. It tells a complete, exciting story and never feels dumbed-down, and yet it's very easy for read. The illustrations are beautiful. It's a shame it's out of print, but after we got it from the library I found a very cheap copy on half.com, so it's still out there.

When my daughter was an early reader, she really liked picture books, even if they were a little more difficult than a standard early reader. I know she read a lot of Leo Lionni in first grade, and Nick Bruel's Bad Kitty.

Series that Highlight Friendship

At this early level children tend to gravitate towards these type of buddy books where well-defined characters turn the reader into a "third-friend"

Frog & Toad and Henry & Muge are great for this, if you like the Frog & Toad series, here are some additional titles:

Oliver & Amanda
Mr. Putter & Tabby
Minnie & Moo

Educator, is THAT why almost every series has "character and character" titles? I've wondered about that!

There's the M&M series (more girl-oriented), George and Martha, and Pinky and Rex, too.

I remember the Minnie and Moo books being pretty funny.

Robert McCloskey books are also good. It's also good practice to read books that the child has heard read to him/her several times.

When we were at the stage of reading 60000 books a week, I found that our library had reading recovery leveled books in bins. I found the PM book series to generally be pretty good. Google "text level correlation chart" to get a pdf with how to relate many of the reading levels. We relied on that chart, the scholastic book finder (above), and random hit or miss.

"I spent twohrs in the library, just looking through all the early readers! There is so much crap out there! I feelbad for the dc,whose parents just get whatever."

Remember, everyone has their own goals and priorities. To each their own. Some of the books recommended here turn my stomach.

DS's favorite books are the Fly Guy books. They are really funny, have great illustrations, and he loves to read them.

I agree with the mention A. Lobel books--esp. love F&T series and "Small Pig".

My 1st grader also loves Mr. Putter and Tabby (so do I).

Also by Dav Pilkey are the Dragon books--they remind me of F&T. "A Friend for Dragon" will break your heart . . . but ends happily.

Another series that we totally love are the Fox books by James Marshall. Fox in Love, Fox at School, etc. These are really funny imo. Four by the Shore and Three by the Sea by the same author are great as well!

Frog/Toad, Henry/Mudge and don't forget Morris/Boris.
