I wan to learn to knit. What is the best way to start? What basic kit do I need? What would be a good starting project? Any advice gratefully appreciated. Having something to do with my hands may help me feel more awake and even give up thumb sucking lol!!

i taught myself to knit using a little $6 booklet from walmart called "I Can't Believe I'm Knitting!" and whenever the directions got confusing, which they did, i just went to the library and looked in different knitting books until i found ones that made sense to me and helped me learn a new technique or two...
but, since you're online, try this site: knittinghelp.com. lots of instructions....
and look up knitting on youtube. a lot of people have posted vids of stitches and tips.....
one of the best first projects is a simple skinny scarf....Cast On 8 sts, work in garter st (knit every stitch) for 120 rows. Bind Off. Use size 10 needles and bulky yarn (any material). All done and very cute!

The woman at my local yarn store recommended starting with a baby cardigan - because you'd learn a lot of skills, and it's small enough that you'd have a finished product in a short time.
I started with the book Kid's Knitting, and made a hat. I just recently made my first scarf, and am currently working on some felted creatures from CraftyAlien.com.
