Ending of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas?

There is no way I'm going to watch this movie, but I've read several reviews and I'm dying to learn how it ends. Anyone who's seen it willing to share? On a related note, my sons and I watched "God on Trial" last week on PBS. It was extremely well done.

A young German boy at the beginning of WWII is happy in his family with devoted mom and distant dad. Dad gets promotion (in SS) and the family moves out to country. Turns out Dad is commandant of a death camp. Bored and curious boy sneaks through woods to what he thinks is a farm and meets a boy in "striped pjs" on other side of fence. They strike up a friendship.
After that I don't know. I guess it's a very intense surprise ending. It's newly out in theatres.

I havent seen the movie and probably won't (i still havent been able to finish Life is Beautiful! i stopped right when the nazis showed up)...but from poking around at imdb it appears that:

Bruno, the son of the Nazi running the camp, wants to see his Jewish friend, so he digs into the camp...he gets caught up in the rush to send a group to the gas chamber, and both boys are gassed. There was a really moving quote something like, he took his friend's hand and nothing in the world would make him ever let it go.

Katherine, thank you so much for the answer. I spoke with a friend today who gave me more details because she had read the book in a book group with her daughter. Interesting and intense. In a way a perfect ending.

Journeymom, I wouldn't see it either, but it sounds like the book might be good.

But still these types of movies/stories need to be out there.
