Name Question

Thread Starter
So, we have been thinking about the name Imogen for our baby. While very uncommon here in the states, I know it is gaining popularity in the UK.

I guess my question is what connotations does the name carry in the UK. Is it a normal name, a hippy name, a yuppie name. And it is pronounced im - o - jin not "I'm a gene", right?

Thanks for all the help!

Hi - it's becoming quite popular over here - I know at least half a dozen (but then i am a teacher so know more children than the average person!)

It's pronounced Im - o - jn (not really an "i" in the final syllable) but lots of people shorten it to Immy

HTH!

I think that's a nice name! As far as I know there are no particular connotations to it

It makes me think of Imogen in Shakespeare's Cymbeline, a virtuous character who meets a happy end.

I've heard it as Im-o-jin

(im like 'him'.)

Not that common although a little more likely than 20 years ago.

Im - o - jin
but the final 'jin' is said quite quickly.

It has a slightly posh/yuppie association but gently so.

I think it's going back out of fashion, actually. There were a lot around when my boys were born, not so many now...

The association? The kind of family who reads The Secret Garden to their children.
