Celebrating milestones

In our family, birthday season lasts from August to November and, if we count kids and adults alike, we’re packing six birthdays into a few short months (my efforts to conceive at least one spring baby obviously were futile). This means we celebrate someone’s birthday every few weeks. With so many birthdays clustered together, it can feel, frankly, overwhelming. In years past, there were parties with homemade play dough favors, themed birthday cakes, and complicated obstacle courses and crafts. That was when there were fewer children, a younger me, a... read more

Holiday Cards

In the mailbox today, I found them: the first round of holiday cards from our (super) organized friends. Exchanging holiday cards is one of my favorite annual traditions. It’s great hearing from high school pals, college roommates, new acquaintances, and everyone in between. I love seeing pictures of my girlfriends’ babies…and all their kids as they grow up. As a couple still trying to navigate the waters of fertility and adoption, Ron and I don’t have a picture to send out of a little munchkin holding a stuffed Santa under a decorated tree. I guess we could send out a... read more

In Search of a Chocolate Advent Calendar

Last year we ended up getting a Charlie and Lola Advent calendar. It was cute and the girl loved it, but didn’t have chocolate in it.  Not that big of a deal, but it’s such a classic tradition! My only concern with the chocolate Advents was whether they were made  in China, the possibility  of it containing a concoction of chemicals and whether or not they’d been recalled. Seems as if all of the ones I came across were. So,this year, as December approached, I searched everywhere for a chocolate Advent calendar that wasn’t made in China. Finally, I found some at the... read more

My favorite, FAVORITE holiday tradition

1. Arrange for you and your spouse/partner to take a day off work, line up babysitters, etc. 2. Sleep in (on a Wed morning!) 3. Make breakfast together 4. Stroll through the near-empty mall (or, at least more empty than it would be on a December weekend) 5. Enjoy a leisurely lunch (with a festive drink) 6. Finish shopping 7. Head home before the commuters hit the road 8. Smile the following Saturday as you scoot right by the crowds on the way to the movies. I blogged about this a few years ago after I stole the idea from an old boss of mine. Freakin’ brilliant. What’s... read more

Winter Solstice

Tomorrow at 11:38 p.m., the earth’s tilt away from the sun will be at a maximum. It’ll be the longest night of the year. Unless I’m in the Rocky Mountains with a pair of skis on my feet, winter isn’t my season. I still plan to celebrate. I’ve barely noticed that it’s December, and we’re already 20 days in. All month I’ve been planning a huge party for my husband. He had a milestone birthday Saturday night. We invited 40 people over to enjoy different dishes from the nine states and the one foreign country he’s lived in (I just finished eating leftover... read more

Celebrating the Final Week of the Year

I love this week.  Adore it.  Look forward to it all year.  The final week of the year. The feeling of being in between, somehow, bringing closure to this year and preparing for what is to come.  I feel a curious peace blended with urgency in this week.  I feel curiously confident that anything is possible. The Peace:In contrast to the rest of the year, somehow in this week I feel as though I have all the time in the world.  The days feel long and quiet, open to possibility.  I might work, play, cook, snuggle  -  I am confident there is ample room in my... read more
